Tuskegee University Site License to Stimulate New GIS Projects

Redlands, California— June 02, 2011—With the implementation of its ArcGIS site license from Esri, Tuskegee University in Alabama is extending its use of GIS into new campus-wide applications, including land-use assessment and asset management. In addition, participating students will learn technical skills that can be applied in future careers.

"We have a mandate from university president Dr. Gilbert Rochon to expand the use of GIS both on campus and within the local community," said Dr. Souleymane Fall, newly appointed ArcGIS site license manager for Tuskegee University. "We want to energize the local community and help them develop a workforce capable of efficiently using geospatial technologies in urban planning and agriculture."

Under Fall's direction, the university is developing an automated mapping/facilities management (AM/FM) system for the entire campus, including its 85 buildings, utility infrastructure, experimental farms, and 4,000-acre forest.

Upon completion, the AM/FM project is expected to provide the following:

  • Faster facility information delivery
  • Better control of the university's assets
  • More efficient allocation and classroom utilization
  • Increased ability for more informed decision making
  • Strong support for the revitalization of the city of Tuskegee

"Another of our primary objectives for the AM/FM project is to extend it, particularly in the management of our experimental farms, and involve the city of Tuskegee and the surrounding area," said Fall.

Because of its emphasis on agriculture, Tuskegee University is recognized as a de jure land-grant university, receiving the recognition and benefits granted by the federal government and specified by the Morrill Act, which supports the teaching of agriculture, science, and engineering in designated US universities.
