Earlier in 2001, the U.S. Geological Survey's (USGS) Associate Director for Geography chartered a study to determine how to "... put truly current information into the hands of our customers ... in a costeffective way". Their vision is that by the year 2010, working with partners, they will provide the Nation with current, accurate, and nationally consistent basic spatial data, including digital data and derived topographic maps.
