Telvent to create more efficient Smart Grid Solutions through Technology Collaboration with Microsoft

Telvent and Microsoft leverage respective business technologies to produce easy-to-use, interoperable software solutions for utilities

November 16, 2010 — Telvent (NASDAQ: TLVT), the leading real-time IT solutions and information provider for a sustainable world, announced today that it will work with Microsoft as a globally managed independent software vendor (ISV) to create more efficient smart grid solutions for the utility industry. Telvent and Microsoft will work together to leverage key aspects of their respective technologies, resulting in more scalable solutions with higher performance and increased security at a lower cost for utilities throughout the world.

This collaboration will allow Telvent greater access to Microsoft technology and resources to address the most pressing needs of the smart grid age, including performance metrics, response times and security. Telvent will also incorporate more of Microsoft’s Smart Energy Reference Architecture (SERA) and cloud computing platform. As a result, utilities will benefit from reduced IT costs, easier-to-implement upgrades and more convenient monthly software fees rather than large, capital-intensive IT projects. Telvent is a Gold Certified Partner of Microsoft and already utilizes the Microsoft platform.

According to Telvent’s CEO, Ignacio Gonzalez, “Telvent’s real-time utility IT expertise and Microsoft’s enterprise IT expertise are leading the industry by providing the latest innovative solutions for organizations around the world. Telvent is both honored and pleased to work with Microsoft to develop advanced solutions for the power industry. This collaboration will benefit the energy industry by helping to meet the world’s evolving energy demands.”

“Utility industry solutions from Microsoft and its partners such as Telvent are based on the world’s most cost-effective, functionally rich IT platform that helps create a more secure computing experience,” said Jon Arnold, managing director, Worldwide Power & Utilities Industry, Microsoft. “Our partners also can use the Microsoft Smart Energy Reference Architecture as the basis for the development of smarter grids and the ‘integrated utility of the future’ because it addresses technology integration throughout the full scope of the smart energy ecosystem. Using Microsoft and partner technologies, utilities will be able to implement faster and more reliably than they otherwise could with the trial-and-error solutions offered by competitors.”

Telvent has proven experience in deploying smart grid projects throughout the world. Today, more than 500 utilities worldwide rely on Telvent technology and solutions. Some of the company’s most recent projects include Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) deployments for Vattenfall (Sweden), Fortum (Finland) and SCADA, DMS, GIS or OMS projects for Consumers Energy (United States), Progress Energy (United States), Distribution Grids of Elektra (Panama), Emcali (Colombia), Saesa (Chile) and CNFL (Costa Rica).
