MINNEAPOLIS, MN—October 27, 2009 — East View Cartographic (EVC), a leader in geospatial data acquisition and GIS production services, has signed an agreement to be a commercial distributor for LandScanTM Global Population Database, which is developed by the Department of Energy's Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL). EVC also has a special authorization to distribute this global database at a country level.
ORNL initially established LandScan as a solution for emergency responses to natural disasters and other threats to civilian population. It was developed with the best census counts, usually at province level for most countries, apportioned to each 30' X 30" grid cell. The data is based on proximity to roads, slope, land cover, and other information. Data is also gathered by using remote sensing for two variables, land cover and nighttime lights, and also uses high-resolution panchromatic imagery for population model.
"In addition to being a powerful database for Environmental and Demographic applications, EVC customers in such varied industries as Energy and Natural Resources, Academic and Libraries, Defense and Intelligence, Avionics, and other Geospatial related fields will find LandScan to be a powerful GIS tool," said Kent D. Lee, President and CEO of EVC. "LandScan is truly a unique database and coupled with EVC's vast inventory of topographic and vector data, and our extensive GIS capabilities, it will be an indispensable product for our customers worldwide."
