Coon Rapids Uses Cityworks to Manage Unique and Current Issues

Software Utilized to Track and Manage Utilities and Code Enforcement

December 01, 2008 -- Sandy, UT — Azteca Systems, Inc., the leading provider of GIS-centric management solutions, announced today the City of Coon Rapids, Minnesota, has demonstrated substantial benefits utilizing Cityworks software in various departments throughout the organization. Most recently, the Code Enforcement Department deployed Cityworks to track foreclosures and vacant properties.

Prior to Coon Rapids’ Cityworks implementation, all maintenance paperwork was done by hand. After extensive research, the City selected Cityworks, valuing its compatibility with GIS. Cityworks was initially implemented in the Sanitary Sewer Department and then in Water, Streets, Stormwater, and Forestry. The City experienced substantial results entering historical information and tracking customer service requests, work orders, resource scheduling, and rotation plans. In the spring of 2008, the City expanded the use of Cityworks to include the Code Enforcement division. The City is now able to easily share information regarding water shut-offs to vacant homes due in the community. Code Enforcement is able to more easily identify properties where excessive use charges apply by using Cityworks instead of looking at a paper file.

With easy search and reporting, management is able to understand an array of information with the click of the mouse. The Public Works department receives a monthly report showing open service requests and/or work orders with the number of days each has been open. Vacant homes are monitored on a weekly basis to ensure any new vacant properties are inspected.

“By using Cityworks, we have a much better picture of what is going on in our City,” states Cindy Hintze, GIS Specialist at Coon Rapids. “Morale improved when the maintenance crews could visually see progress – what had been completed. When our insurance provider needs information, we can now provide that information on the spot. And when Public Works turns water on or off at a home, we can immediately update the Code Enforcement work order, allowing a better snapshot of the housing issues. Monitoring open service requests and work orders through to completion using Cityworks is easy and helps us ensure that nothing is getting overlooked or forgotten.”

The City has been very pleased with their use of Cityworks in its various areas and plans to further expand its use across the organization. In winter of 2008-09, Cityworks will be implemented in the Parks Department. Further details of Coon Rapids’ use of Cityworks will be featured in an article in the upcoming December 2008 addition of the Cityworks InPrint newsletter.

“It’s always exciting when a client experiences such great results using our software,” says Brian Haslam, President of Azteca Systems. “While so many of our customers have similarly deployed Cityworks across many departments, we commend Coon Rapids for putting Cityworks to work to manage traditional purposes – utilities – but in this case, using Cityworks to manage more timely issues such as foreclosed and vacant properties. This illustrates the inherent ease and flexibility of using Cityworks to manage current events and needs of an agency. Many of our clients have used Cityworks for disaster and emergency response. Cityworks is scalable and flexible, allowing users to meet new and unique needs with ease and the same outstanding results.”
