Dassault Systemes: EDAG Implements DELMIA Automation For Virtual Commissioning of Manufacturing Facilities

AUBURN HILLS, Mich. & FELLBACH, Germany—(BUSINESS WIRE)—September 29, 2008— Dassault Systèmes (Paris:DSY) (NASDAQ:DASTY) (Nasdaq: DASTY; Euronext Paris: #13065, DSY.PA), a world leader in 3D and Product Lifecycle Management (PLM), announces that its DELMIA Automation solutionfor simulating virtual operations of manufacturing facilitiesis being implemented by EDAG, the worlds largest turnkey partner in plant construction and low volume production to the automotive and aerospace industries. DELMIA Automation connects the mechanical elements within a facility or machine to real production system controls. As a result, the control engineer can test the control logic and human-machine interface within the mechanical cell before any of the equipment is built, which helps to reduce debug and testing time.

The ability to virtually optimize and validate control behavior in a production cell is particularly advantageous for us as an engineering partner with our own associated line builder, said Karina Schäfer, project manager and head of the digital factory at EDAG. It lets us move from the construction site into the office, which in turn creates better working conditions.

Automation simulation is playing an ever-greater role in the automotive industry, and EDAG is using DELMIA Automation to prepare for the anticipated future OEM demand. According to an ARC Advisory report, an automotive OEM implementing DELMIA Automation in its assembly plants for controls validation and integration has been able to eliminate off-site physical validation of these systems. This saves significant startup costs and several months of work per installation. As engineering teams are able to find problems that would not be discovered for weeks after production started, product accelerations are much smoother and initial quality and productivity is improved.

EDAGs decision to go with DELMIA Automation is proof that the topic of automation simulation has found an enthusiastic audience in the industry, said Rafael Haida, key account manager for DELMIA Automation Dassault Systèmes. It also shows that DELMIA is on the right track with a comprehensive solution spanning the gap from V5 Robotics to DELMIA Automation.

DELMIA Automation solutions allow the control engineer to experiment with the virtual model of the machine--or cell--to test, validate, and debug prior to physical commissioning. In addition, engineers can perform a virtual integration of all devices including hydraulic, pneumatic, and electrical, to make sure each is complete and properly designed. It provides a natural extension to the DELMIA PLM (Product Lifecycle Management) offering and integrates seamlessly with the all of the Dassault Systèmes portfolio. This allows control departments to work in parallel, and share information, with mechanical and electrical departments earlier in the development process allowing optimization of engineering processes.
