COGNET Integrates Video into International Transmission’s GIS System

November 1, 2005 (Livonia, MI) -- COGNET GIS, a Livonia Michigan based Geospatial Information Systems consulting firm, has developed a video enhancement to the existing GIS application in use by the International Transmission Company. International Transmission now has the ability to view intelligent video files of International Transmission’s corridors and other similar installations within their service area.

As the corridor video plays, the location and bearing are displayed within International Transmission’s GIS application as a crosshair with a red directional arrow and updated accordingly as the video progresses. The video’s flight path and associated GPS trail can be displayed as either interactive session graphics or as optional data monitor graphics.

Larry Cosgrove, GIS Practice Leader at Cognet, said, “As with each GIS model, every new layer of geospatial data added allows the users to see their same data in a totally different way thus creating new opportunities and possibilities. The integration of their corridor videos with their GIS model can assist International Transmission engineers with activities such as vegetation management, engineering, maintenance, and planning.”

Users can play, pause, fast-forward, and fast-reverse the video. The displayed GPS trail session graphics are also used by the “Search and Play” and “Search and Pause” functions. Users select the function and select any point along the GPS trail. The video will automatically locate to that point and begin playing or play a few seconds before and then pause at the selected point.

“This functionality is straightforward and cost effective to implement due to the open architecture of our GIS application,” said Jon Jipping, Vice President of Engineering. “Through this capability, International Transmission is better able to monitor our equipment to ensure the highest levels of reliability for our customers.”
