WASHINGTON – Jan. 10, 2019 – The American Institute of Architects (AIA) is recognizing Jan Gehl, Hon. FAIA, Michael Sorkin, and Anne Taylor, Hon. AIA, with its 2019 Collaborative Achievement Award.
The Collaborative Achievement Award recognizes and encourages distinguished achievements of design professionals, clients, organizations, architect teams, knowledge communities and others who have had a beneficial influence on or advanced the architectural profession.
A seminal book by Jan Gehl Hon. FAIA, “Life Between Buildings: Using Public Space,” challenged readers to contemplate what they may often take for granted in open public spaces. Gehl has equipped the profession with the tools it needs to continuously support society’s democratic ideals. Gehl’s work is renowned for crafting a language and methodology for understanding public life that continues to resonate.
Michael Sorkin’s prolific writing has inspired countless architects and planners in their pursuit of more just and sustainable communities. For more than 40 years, beginning with his tenure as architecture critic for the Village Voice to his current stint as architecture critic at The Nation, Sorkin has used journalism to present the challenges of the built environment to a broad audience.
The 50-year career of Anne Taylor, Hon. AIA, has linked and elevated architecture and education in creative ways. A frequent collaborator with design professionals, Taylor’s focus on integrated design curricula has turned architecture into a lens through which today’s children can study the world. AIA chapters in New Mexico have long partnered with Taylor and have greatly benefited from her professional development workshops and University of New Mexico courses.
