OGC requests comment on Publish/Subscribe standards for geospatial data

September 23, 2015 -- Members of the Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC®) request comments on the candidate OGC Publish/Subscribe Core (PSC) 1.0 Interface Standard and the OGC Publish/Subscribe SOAP Binding (PSSB) 1.0 Interface Standard.

These candidate OGC standards define core concepts and mechanisms for enabling the Publish/Subscribe messaging pattern with OGC Web Services. Publish/Subscribe may be used independently of or in conjunction with the Request/Reply messaging pattern specified by many existing OGC Web Services. The Publish/Subscribe messaging model is distinguished from the Request/Reply model in that it provides for an ongoing, persistent expression of interest (a subscription) and the asynchronous delivery of messages – typically containing or referencing geospatial data – that match the subscription.

The candidate OGC Publish/Subscribe Core 1.0 Interface Standard defines a common conceptual framework and functionality, independent of particular binding technologies such as KVP, SOAP and REST.

The candidate OGC Publish/Subscribe SOAP Binding 1.0 Interface Standard specifies an extension to OGC Publish/Subscribe 1.0 Core to allow for Publish/Subscribe communications using the SOAP protocol.

These candidate OGC standards are available for review at http://www.opengeospatial.org/standards/requests/138. Comments are due by 23 October 2015.

The OGC is a not for profit international geospatial standards consortium of more than 515 companies, government agencies, research organizations, and universities participating in a consensus process to develop publicly available standards. OGC’s open standards support interoperable solutions that "geo-enable" the Web, wireless and location-based services, and mainstream IT.
