Powered by PE INTERNATIONAL'S GaBi data, the largest environmental dataset for LCA, Tally allows architects, engineers and designers to evaluate the environmental impact of building materials early in the design process when it's most valuable. It provides actionable data across eight categories, such as global warming, eutrophication, and primary energy demand accelerating a user's ability to create a realistic bill of materials and gather quick insight into the ecological tradeoffs of different design scenarios.
"Having now used Tally for two LCA projects, I am convinced it is the right tool for Life Cycle input in the design process. When attempting lower carbon buildings, Tally helps quantify both an LCA baseline, and where to focus further reduction strategies," said Donald W Davies, P.E., S.E., senior principal, Magnusson Klemencic Associates. "Our LEED V4 project specifications can now ask for Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) with Tally organizing the information. With Tally and LEED V4, we are adding EPDs to our specifications for concrete, steel, CMU, and timber, and look to its expanding role for other project components in the future."
A unique feature of Tally is that in addition to the built-in comprehensive data from GaBi, branded product information can be imported as well. Manufacturers can work with PE INTERNATIONAL to have data from their EPDs evaluated and imported into Tally so the products are readily available for consideration and designers can evaluate specific items as part of the design process. By providing branded data in the design phase, users have a clear picture of the best products to use for their projects.
Tally has been successfully implemented by diverse organizations, including architecture and design firms, university researchers, and advocacy groups looking to target the environmental impact of building projects. Its many users include: Arup, Buro Happold, BNIM, Gensler, Magnusson Klemencic Associates, Stanford University, Tulane University, Virginia Tech University, the American Wood Council, and environmental advocacy group, Architecture 2030. Firms in Germany, Denmark, and Italy have also begun projects with Tally.
"We chose to use Tally on the Atlanta Falcons stadium project to help guide critical design decisions and meet the LEED v4 whole building LCA credit," said Chris Devolder, project/sustainability leader at 360 Architecture. "The intuitive interface and comprehensive third-party, verified data allowed us to quickly understand the sustainability implications of our choices which made it an extremely valuable part of our overall design process."
"We are excited that Tally has become an effective tool to help the AEC community make informed design choices and that we are now able to better connect manufacturers to the design process through the introduction of product-specific EPD data," said Heather Gadonniex, director of sustainable building and construction for PE INTERNATIONAL. "We look forward to introducing the benefits of Tally to many in the construction industry at Greenbuild 2014."
