StreetMapper laser surveying takes to the streets of Malaysia

June 02, 2011 -- StreetMapper, the vehicle-based laser mapping system, has successfully completed high speed surveying trials in Malaysia.  StreetMapper conducted a detailed engineering survey of the Univerisiti Teknologi Malaysia in a challenge, set by surveying company Jalal Johari Consultants, to compare StreetMapper’s performance against traditional total station surveying.  Collecting 2.7 billion highly accurate measurements in just a matter of hours StreetMapper came out on top for speed of data capture, surveyor safety and ease of use.

A 3D animation of the StreetMapper survey of the University campus in Johor, created using Pointools point cloud software, can be viewed at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BeNleNslKOM&feature=youtube_gdata_player

“We compared the data from the StreetMapper system with total station measurements to determine a number of factors including speed of data capture, data accuracy and ease of data processing,” commented Jalal Johari, Principal Licensed Surveyor of Jalal Johari Consultants SDN BHD. “The first advantage that became apparent was the need for only two members of staff; one to drive the vehicle and another to operate the system, the safety of the survey team was also apparent as they were securely located within the survey vehicle. Then it was the speed of data capture that impressed, with StreetMapper collecting up to 300,000 points per second from just one scanner.”

“However, perhaps the most significant advantage of the StreetMapper system is the accuracy of the data it captures,” continued Jalal. “During analysis of the trial results the StreetMapper data was found to fall exactly within the systems’ stated capabilities. We were also delighted with the speed and ease of processing the raw data to produce the point cloud, which can then be used to produce animations and fly throughs and imported into CAD or GIS software for further analysis or manipulation.”

StreetMapper, which is a joint development between UK based 3D Laser Mapping and German based guidance and navigation specialist IGI, has been specifically designed for the rapid 3D mapping of highways, runways, railways, infrastructure and buildings. Using vehicle-mounted lasers offering a 360-degree field of view StreetMapper enables high precision mapping to a range of 300 metres, a capacity of 300,000 measurements per second per sensor and recorded accuracies in independent real world projects of better than 10 millimetres.
