Arkansas State Highway and Transportation Department Selects Intergraph® Solution

Intergraph's I/Incident Analyst to Improve Safety, Reduce Fatalities

HUNTSVILLE, Ala., June 1, 2011 — (PRNewswire) — Intergraph® announces that the Arkansas State Highway and Transportation Department (AHTD) recently selected I/Incident Analyst to improve the safety of its roadways. Of the 32 billion vehicle miles traveled in Arkansas last year, 78 percent occurred within the state highway system managed by AHTD.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, fatalities on Arkansas roadways have been declining in recent years. To ensure this downward trend continues, the planning division of AHTD will use Intergraph's I/Incident Analyst to identify repeat incident spots on rural roadways. This identification process enables preventative measures to be taken to protect motorists. While AHTD has accumulated extensive incident data and currently has the ability to query it, deeper analysis of the data and the ability to present the results visually with bar charts and maps is critical.

"Promoting motorists' safety is our most important responsibility," said Sharon Hawkins, Mapping Section Head, Planning and Research Division, AHTD. "I/Incident analyst allows AHTD to unlock the real-world information contained within our volumes of data, and literally create a picture of the situation on our roadways. Armed with this detailed information, we can easily determine the most dangerous places in the system, take action to improve the driving environment for the public and continually evaluate the efficacy of our initiatives. We expect the project with I/Incident Analyst to save lives and have a very positive impact on everyone who travels Arkansas roads."

Intergraph's I/Incident Analyst provides an intuitive, user-friendly environment for analyzing incident activities, allowing agencies to make well-informed decisions and effectively deploy resources. Already a popular product among public safety and security agencies, I/Incident Analyst also lends itself well to the improvement of public safety in transportation systems, making it an effective tool for transportation departments, transit agencies and rail authorities.

After this initial project focusing on rural roads, AHTD plans to expand use of I/Incident Analyst to other divisions of the highway department.

About Arkansas DOT

The first State Highway Commission was appointed in 1913. Amendment 42 of the Constitution of Arkansas, adopted in 1952, established the present five-member State Highway Commission. Under this authority, the State Highway Commission is vested with powers and duties for administering Arkansas' State Highway System. Act 192 of 1977 created the Arkansas State Highway and Transportation Department (AHTD), adding responsibilities for coordinating public and private transportation activities and implementing a safe and efficient intermodal transportation system.

As of January 1, 2010, the state-administered highway system totaled 16,442 miles, or 16.4 percent, of the 100,031 miles of public roads in Arkansas. Nationally, the State Highway System ranks 12th in mileage and the State ranks 41st in total revenues per mile. During State Fiscal Year 2010, projects totaling approximately US $385 million were let to contract for state highways.
