Esri’s Storytelling with Maps Contest Kicks Off

Redlands, California— May 02, 2011—Like photographs, maps tell stories. The storytelling potential of maps has increased dramatically over the years with the evolution of geographic information system (GIS) technology, the Internet, and mobile applications. In recognition of this trend, Esri is inviting users to enter their most compelling web map or mobile app in the Storytelling with Maps contest.

Participants must use Esri technology such as ArcGIS Desktop, ArcGIS Explorer, ArcGIS Online, and/or any of Esri’s web APIs or mobile software developer kits (SDKs). Entries will be judged on how effectively they make the subject matter interesting, understandable, and engaging. The contest starts April 29 and ends June 10. Winners will be announced in July at the 2011 Esri International User Conference in San Diego, California.

First-place winners will receive a plaque; certificate; and copy of the critically heralded National Geographic Atlas of the World, 9th Edition, an image capture of our entire planet using the most advanced digital mapping and imaging technology available. First-place winners will also receive a copy of the Esri Press book Cartographica Extraordinaire, which shows the remarkable work of mapmakers throughout history, giving a unique glimpse into the evolution of cartography and the world. Second- and third-place winners will receive a plaque, certificate, and copy of Cartographica Extraordinaire. There is also a community favorite award, where members of the ArcGIS community can vote for their favorite web and mobile apps. The winners in this category will also receive a certificate and a copy of Cartographica Extraordinaire. In addition, the first 500 participants who submit a valid web or mobile app entry are eligible to receive a free T-shirt.
