City of El Paso Selects Joint Mobility Solution from Motion Computing and Accela

Rugged Tablet PCs Equipped With Mobile Field Software Are Being Deployed to Increase Field Productivity, Documentation Quality and Collaboration

AUSTIN, Texas — (BUSINESS WIRE) — September 28, 2010 — Motion Computing, a leading provider of integrated mobile computing solutions today announced that the City of El Paso is deploying Motion® Tablet PCs running the latest mobile software from Accela, Inc., a top provider of Web-based and mobile applications that make government services available 24/7. The solution was chosen to increase productivity, documentation quality and team satisfaction across departments.

El Paso, an existing Accela customer, chose to upgrade to Accela Mobile OfficeTM, a solution announced earlier this year, which provides field-based government workers with direct access to the same data, GIS maps and tools as back-office staff. El Paso wanted to expand the availability of Accela Mobile Office across departments including the Department of Public Health; Environmental Services Department’s Solid Waste, Vector Control, and Code Enforcement Divisions; Parks Department, and Fire Marshall’s Office. Excited about the application’s advanced mobility features, El Paso’s mobile solution team began the search for the best mobile field device.

The team was in search of a highly mobile, yet robust, computing device that would replace high-priced computers that were too cumbersome and heavy to enable full mobility. Field personnel had complained about weight, small screens, and the need to carry additional peripherals. It was important that El Paso find a device that would fit the needs of many departments, and after an extensive search chose Motion’s rugged F5 and J3400 Tablet PCs.

“We were challenged to select a new mobility solution that would meet the unique needs of each division,” said Suzy Santo, department administrative manager, El Paso Environmental Services Department. “With the Motion Tablets, we found devices that would enable us to fully utilize the Accela solution, while offering the mobility that our field teams require.”

El Paso chose the Motion F5 and J3400 Tablet PCs because of the lightweight and mobile designs, rugged durability including the available solid state drive (SSD), outdoor display, integrated mobile broadband with GPS and stylus input which provides the ability to capture digital signatures in the field. Integrated features including a digital camera and barcode scanner and a variety of accessories such as mobile docks and field-designed carrying solutions that made the devices customizable for individual needs were key selection criteria.

“After working with several devices that were not tailored to field use, we were really excited about the mobility and durability available with the Motion Tablets,” added Santo. “With powerful performance and the ability to run robust technology solutions we didn’t have to compromise on power, weight or functionality.”

The tablets complement the upgrade to Accela Mobile Office, which extends processing capabilities to the field for inspections, code enforcement and work orders. El Paso was impressed with the GIS/GPS routing, broadcast messaging, small portlets and navigation ease. Additionally, the solution’s create-and-store capability, which permits later syncing was critical, as El Paso’s mountainous terrain often causes lost connectivity during transactions. Now, with the tablets’ integrated features, field teams can capture barcodes, or integrate pictures and digital signatures into files and share them with office-based personnel, significantly improving documentation quality, productivity and collaboration.

“The highly synergistic Accela and Motion solution came out as the unanimous choice across all departments as it provided the most flexibility for multiple computing environments,” added Santo. “The robust software capabilities in combination with the field-ready benefits of the tablet PCs will significantly improve field productivity and team satisfaction.”
