Geosparc at FOSS4G Barcelona: unveiling new version of Geomajas and certified plug-ins for Geomajas

Ghent, BELGIUM — August 30, 2010 — Geosparc, the company commercially supporting the open source GIS application framework Geomajas, today announced that it will be present at Foss4G, the international conference for Free and Open Source Software for Geospatial, in Barcelona (Spain) from 6 till 9 September 2010 at Booth 12.

At Foss4G the Company will demonstrate numerous applications built with Geomajas and officially announce the new Geomajas 1.7. At the same time the Company will introduce no less than 8 Geosparc certified software plug-ins that can easily be added onto Geomajas. Key members of its development team have also been selected to give presentations and poster sessions at the conference.

Pieter De Graef, Community Manager & Lead Developer, will talk about ‘Geomajas, the new kid on the block’.

Just as we are all getting used to working with Javascript and HTML when creating web-based GIS applications, comes along Geomajas, the newest addition to the OSGeo family. As Google introduced interactive maps to the public, OpenLayers has demonstrated what could be achieved when using the full power of the browser. Now, again, the bar must be raised in order to lift the web GIS world to the level of the thick client desktop systems. Geomajas is an end-to-end solution for creating web-based GIS applications, where a strong server-side focus allows for data integration, security, and optionally even rendering to be done server-side, without having to interfere with the client. This keeps the client as thin and performing as possible. The presentation introduces the new Geomajas 1.7 technology, as well as why it's different from other software products.

Joachim Van der Auwera, Senior Software Developer, will talk about ‘The evolution of GIS data’.

We all know GIS data is not static. The data will change, but still users expect to have consistent view on the world. Using transactions in your GIS data store is often no solution as editing and approval may take a long time to finish. During his presentation Joachim goes over some options for versioning your data by investigating how this is handled in various systems and looks at some of the implications for the applications and user experience. He looks at the inclusion of versioning of your data, the use and application of business processes and business rules and the effects on scalability.

Jan De Moerloose, Software Architect of Geomajas, will hold a poster session about ‘Do It Yourself spatial application creation with Geomajas’.

The European ITEA project DIYSE (Do It Yourself Smart Experiences) aims at enabling ordinary people to easily create, setup and control applications in their smart living environments as well as in the public Internet-of-Things space. As an industry partner, Geosparc is leveraging this project to create an application generator and low level application creation environment for the Geomajas spatial web application framework.

Joachim Van der Auwera and Pieter De Graef, will jointly hold a poster session about the ‘Geomajas Roadmap’.

2010 was an important year for the Geomajas project. A bit more than a year after the creation of Geomajas as an independent framework, a major milestone was reached with the release of version 1.6. This gave the community the advantages of modularisation, ability to support multiple faces or client-side technologies, a powerful security framework and a configuration system based on the spring framework which allows a lot of extensibility without impacting the API.

Additionally the Geomajas Certified Partner, DFC Software Engineering (Belgium), will give a presentation about ‘ Real-Time position analysis during soccer games’. During soccer games a number of doubtful situations can arise that cannot be easily judged instantly. The presentation talks about a web-based GIS application that displays soccer game in real-time. The application, developed for the BIPS™ project (Ball Intelligent Positioning System), enables the analysis in real-time of the position of all soccer players on the field or to playback at a later time. During such a recording, relevant events such as goal, ball out, offside, etc. are also detected and reported.
