Geovariances - Setting Standards for Decontamination of Radioactive Sites

IDAHO FALLS, Idaho — (BUSINESS WIRE) — August 26, 2010 Geovariances - the global leader of geostatistical solutions – launches Kartotrak , the first commercially available solution dedicated to all stages of any remediation program of radio-contaminated soil.

French company Geovariances announces the launch of Kartotrak, the first integrated software solution based on geostatistical methods.

In real time, Kartotrak can characterize sites that are contaminated by radioactive substances before, during and after soil or structure clean-up.

Kartotrak will be unveiled at DD&R (Decommissioning, Decontamination & Reutilization Conference), an event that unites the global players of the nuclear industry in Idaho Falls from August 29th to September 2nd, 2010.

The result of an exhaustive and innovative research program (co-piloted by the French Commission for Atomic Energy – the ‘CEA’), Kartotrak fuses functions of Geographic Information Systems (GIS), takes into account measurements of the level of soil contamination in real-time, processes data with geostatistics to obtain precise maps of contamination over the zones to be cleaned up, refines the characterization survey plan as information arrives and improves decision-making processes.

Kartotrak can be used at every stage of any remediation project and is, quite simply, a revolutionary device.

Robust and ergonomic, functioning within a widely available operating system (Windows XP, Vista or 7), Kartotrak is supported by all necessary studies and tests to ensure optimum performance.

ABOUT GEOSTATISTICS
Geostatistics is one of the most sophisticated methods for modelling spatial data.

It offers reliable and precise methods for sampling network optimization, data quality control and analysis, volume and resource estimation and risk assessment.

The essential strength of geostatistics lies in its precise reading of the spatial behaviour of data and correlations between two distant measurements.

Developed in the 1960s by researchers from École des Mines de Paris (Mines ParisTech), geostatistics has proved essential in many fields - particularly for the estimation of mining and oil reserves.

Geostatistics boasts many other applications in the environmental field - where health is at stake and remediation costs are considerable.

For example, it can be used for the evaluation of natural resources (fishing, agriculture, forestry...), for measuring the spread of pollution, or in sectors as varied as civil engineering, epidemiological studies and oceanology.
