Gas Utility Joins Other DC-Area Infrastructure Owners to Improve Collaboration and Reduce Costs
April 27, 2010 -- Envista Corporation, a provider of web-based software for infrastructure project coordination, today announced that Washington Gas Light Company has selected Envista's Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) application to help manage construction and maintenance projects. Washington Gas serves more than one million residential, commercial and industrial customers throughout the Washington, DC metropolitan area.
Washington Gas takes a leadership role as a gas utility, joining the Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission (WSSC) and Washington, DC in deploying Envista's map-driven solution. The two utilities and the city will manage thousands of miles of infrastructure using Envista’s visual, map-based solution that identifies conflicting construction and maintenance projects and facilitates real-time communication to resolve them. Washington Gas operates thousands of miles of distribution pipelines in the area. The District Department of Transportation (DDOT) manages 1,157 lane miles of roads in the nation’s capital. And WSSC maintains a network of nearly 5,400 miles of sewer pipeline, and more than 5,500 miles of fresh water pipeline in the DC suburban area.
According to Darryl Jackson, Director - Operations Work Planning, Measurement and Technology for Washington Gas, “We selected Envista because it demonstrated the potential to reduce our costs of performing construction and maintenance work and to reduce the impact of our projects in the communities we serve. For example, our knowing pavement condition on streets helps us make alternative plans that enable less intrusive construction.” Jackson continues, “Envista enables faster and more frequent communication with the DDOT. We are able to share information, to understand what the conflicts mean to each party, and to know who to contact to resolve issues.”
Envista connects the people that manage infrastructure to enable real-time planning to minimize disruptions on neighborhoods while aging infrastructure is repaired. The map-driven system enables all parties to quickly view the locations of all infrastructure projects in their area and the related data. Users can respond quickly to conflicts in the right of way and to minimize street cuts and take advantage of cost reduction opportunities.
