Christian Tanasescu to Lead Software Development & Applications Benchmarking

FREMONT, Calif. — (BUSINESS WIRE) — March 3, 2010SGI (NASDAQ: SGI), a global leader in HPC and data center solutions, today announced that it has named two industry technology veterans to lead hardware and software engineering at SGI. Rick Chapek was named senior vice president of hardware engineering and Christian Tanasescu was named vice president of software engineering, effective immediately.

As senior vice president of hardware engineering, Mr. Chapek is responsible for key hardware development and engineering deliverables across SGI product families including high-performance computing (HPC), servers, storage and data center computing solutions. Since joining SGI in 1996, Mr. Chapek has held a variety of positions in the engineering and manufacturing organizations where he was responsible for hardware engineering support services, product and ASIC design, diagnostic development, platform software and manufacturing engineering.

As vice president of software engineering, Christian Tanasescu is responsible for system software and middleware development, independent software vendors (ISVs) relationships, applications benchmarking and SGI’s cloud computing solution, Cyclone™. Since joining SGI in 1992, Mr. Tanasescu has held a number of technical management roles including: HPC system engineering, strategic partner management, performance modeling and application enablement programs.

Prior to joining SGI, Mr. Chapek was with Cray Research where he held numerous technical leadership roles. He holds a BSEET from DeVry Institute of Technology in Kansas City, Missouri and an MBA from Cardinal Stritch University in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

Prior to SGI, Mr. Tanasescu worked at Fujitsu-Siemens in compiler development and was a member of the Fortran 90 standardization committee. Earlier, he held an engineering position at Tecan AG, where he developed real-time multitasking software. Mr. Tanasescu holds a master’s degree in Computer Science from Polytechnic University of Bucharest.
