DAYTON, OH -- (MARKET WIRE) -- Jan 07, 2010 -- Woolpert announced today that the firm has purchased two Optech Gemini Airborne Laser Terrain Mappers (ALTM) and one LYNX Mobile Mapper system to support the firm's commitment to advanced remote sensing and LiDAR services.
The Gemini systems provide the latest in LiDAR technology with an effective pulse repetition rate of up to 167 kHz. The Gemini's waveform digitizer technology produces significantly more information than a conventional LiDAR point cloud. The further enhancement of this data will prove beneficial as LiDAR advances from being solely used as a topographic instrument to being used as a true remote sensing device to aid in automated feature data extraction, forestry applications, and carbon sequestration mapping to name a few.
The LYNX Mobile Mapper system is a new technology that collects survey-grade LiDAR data at over 200,000 measurements per second with a 360 degree field-of-view (FOV).
"As a pioneer in LiDAR, Woolpert has always committed the resources necessary to achieve a leading edge in LiDAR technology," said Jeff Lovin, Woolpert vice president and director of geospatial services.
With the acquisition of the Optech Gemini systems with full waveform technology, Woolpert will be equipped to maintain its position as a leader in the LiDAR market. A key component to that strategy is the addition of the Lynx Mobile Mapping System to the firm's suite of LiDAR sensor and services.
"We see huge potential in the mobile LiDAR market over the next several years and look forward to expanding our existing LiDAR services to include this promising technology," said Lovin. "We are excited to partner again with Optech, which we purchased our very first airborne LiDAR system from in 1998. We purchased our next generation of LiDAR sensors from Optech because we felt that after much evaluation, not only are they ahead of the competition with their waveform technology, they are clearly leading the market with their mobile platform."
