StreetMapper set to Revolutionise Surveying in China

December 09, 2009 -- 3D Laser Mapping has delivered the first laser based mobile mapping system to China. Utilising the latest laser scanning technology to achieve sub centimetre accurate measurements at normal traffic speeds StreetMapper has already demonstrated its potential in a variety of projects. These include the high precision mapping of the Peking University Campus, 3D modelling of road tunnels in Beijing together with highway surveying for road construction and network planning.

The StreetMapper system, which is operated by Tecdawn HT and partners Eastdawn IT, was also used as part of a project to assess, analyse and manage public safety and security ahead of the 11th National Games of the Peoples Republic of China.

“We have clearly shown the potential of StreetMapper, in both real world projects and commercial demonstrations, to capture high accuracy, high resolution 3D data far superior to the capabilities of other systems and methodologies,” commented Dr Liang Tang, President and CEO of Tecdawn HT. “Having obtained this evidence we are determined to maximise this potential using the StreetMapper system to revolutionise the surveying element of projects across China.”

StreetMapper 360, which is a joint development between 3D Laser Mapping and German guidance and navigation specialist IGI, has been specifically designed for the rapid 3D mapping of highways, runways, railways, infrastructure and buildings. Using vehicle-mounted Riegl VQ-250 lasers offering a 360-degree field of view StreetMapper enables high precision mapping to a range of 300 metres, a capacity of 300,000 measurements per second per sensor and recorded accuracies in independent real world projects of better than 10 millimetres. Travelling at speeds of up to 70 kmph StreetMapper can capture every detail along the highway corridor including barriers, gulleys, overhead wires and building facades, helping surveyors to create highly accurate 3D computer models for planning, maintenance and incident management.

The National Games of the Peoples Republic of China is the most premier sports event of China at a National Level and is even referred to by some as ‘China’s Olympics’. The 11th event was held in October 2009 in Shandong and attracted more than 10,000 athletes from more than 30 provinces competing in 33 different sporting events, achieving 1,241 medals. For the first time the Public Security Authorities in China used LiDAR Mapping and 3D Modelling Techniques, including StreetMapper, to assess, analyse and manage public safety and security ahead of the event capturing data to produce detailed 3D models in support of scenario planning and incident simulation.
