Spatial Roundtable Discussion Turns to Pipeline Assets

Redlands, California—November 30, 2009—Pipeline industry leaders are pulling up virtual chairs at the Spatial Roundtable to discuss how pipeline operators locate assets. Hosted by ESRI, the online discussion features timely topics as they relate to geographic information system (GIS) technology. ESRI's pipeline and gas industry manager, Rob Brook, leads the conversation by recounting changes in pipeline operations and questioning the continued use of stationing—a linear method of defining the position of assets.

"Pipeline operators have a choice whether to use linear measurement or geography to record the position of assets in the field," Brook said. "The Spatial Roundtable discussion provides an opportunity to gauge industry perception as to which method is better and why."

Spatial Roundtable is designed for GIS industry thought leaders to share their points of view about concerns, trends, challenges, and technologies. Participants in the online Spatial Roundtable discussion include the main contributor, who initiates the discussion, and invited topic-expert guests. Site visitors may also add comments. Topics remain open for discussion for six weeks. Archived topics are accessible for 24 months.
