ITA Selects Dassault Systèmes to Automate Aircraft Structural Assembly

DS Solutions Will Be Used in a Project Developed in Partnership with Embraer

SÃO PAULO, Brazil, November 10, 2009 - Dassault Systèmes (DS) (Euronext Paris: #13065, DSY.PA), a world leader in 3D and Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) solutions, and Instituto Tecnológico de Aeronáutica (ITA), the Brazilian federal research and education institution focused on the aerospace industry, announced today that they will be using DS solutions in a project to automate the aircraft structural assembly process, developed in partnership with Embraer.

With the deployment of DELMIA Manufacturing Engineer, the companies expect to develop a process of robotic automation for the assembly of aircrafts’ bodies. The project started with the opening of the Aircraft Structural Assembly Automation Lab last June.

According to Luís Gonzaga Trabasso, Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering, coordinator of ITA’s graduate course on Mechanical and Aeronautical Engineering and the project’s coordinator, “Embraer has already been using DELMIA to run simulations. After a number of analyses, we chose DS solutions because they are the most appropriate to meet the initiative’s needs.”

According to Marcelo Lemos, vice president for the Americas and president for Latin America, “ITA and Embraer are major references in the development of aeronautical projects in Brazil and worldwide. The implementation of DS solutions in the development centers of both institutions represents the excellence and vast potential application of these solutions.”

Located in a 300-square meter area, the Aircraft Structural Assembly Automation Lab complements the infrastructure of the Center of Competence in Manufacturing from ITA’s Mechanical Engineering Division, and allows the enabling of human resources in this technological area.
