Telvent Smart Grid DMS Targets Improved Electric Network Performance at University of Michigan

Project sets pace for trend in university energy optimization, sustainability

October 27, 2009 —Telvent (NASDAQ: TLVT), the IT company for a sustainable and secure world, announced today it will be supplying a new Distribution Management System (DMS) for the University of Michigan. Telvent’s DMS, one of the company’s Smart Operations solutions and part of its comprehensive Smart Grid Solution suite, will help the University achieve its goal of energy sustainability and serve as an example for its community, businesses, other universities and individuals.

The University of Michigan generates much of its own high-voltage electricity, as well as receives power from Detroit Edison. In order to provide power and lighting to more than 600 major buildings throughout three campuses, it must distribute and manage loads in a manner similar to that of a small utility. Telvent’s DMS will provide network operators a complete view and set of control functions to manage the current state of the University’s electric distribution system.

In addition to the development, installation and start-up of the new DMS, Telvent will integrate the DMS with the university’s electric system supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) system and ArcFM™ geographic information system (GIS) applications. Linked with the network SCADA, the DMS will acquire and analyze data while displaying actual network conditions. With this information, operators can prepare contingencies for load transfers and avoid potential overload situations - increasing operational efficiency and quality of service for its customers.

This complete solution, proven to provide unrivaled network management capabilities, will support the University of Michigan’s commitment to minimizing energy consumption and containing energy expenditures - while providing an example for other large universities looking to fortify energy sustainability.

“This project positions the University of Michigan as a pioneer in energy efficiency management,” noted Manuel Sanchez, Telvent’s chairman and CEO. “The scalability and open standards of Telvent’s Smart Grid Solution components, coupled with our proven project methodology, allow a non-traditional utility provider such as the University of Michigan to attain energy sustainability gains comparable to the largest electric grid operators.”
