The City of Redlands, CA, Executes Remote Implementation of Cityworks

City Realizes Benefits of Remote Implementation and Cityworks’ GIS-Centric Nature

October 27, 2009 -- Sandy, UT — The City of Redlands, California, recently completed a remote implementation of Cityworks by Azteca Systems, Inc., the leading provider of GIS-centric management solutions, and was pleased with both the ease and convenience in completing the process. Selecting Cityworks because of its inherent GIS compatibility, Redlands states that both the benefits of the software’s GIS approach and the success of their remote implementation have contributed to their initial and continuing satisfaction with the product.

Azteca Systems provides two implementation methods to assist clients with the deployment of Cityworks — standard implementation and Remote Implementation Support (RIS). In the RIS approach, an Azteca Project Manager meets with the organization’s representative through a series of webcast meetings to implement the Cityworks software. In May of 2008, Azteca began an RIS of Cityworks at the City of Redlands for the Quality of Life and Municipal Utilities & Engineering Departments. Redlands selected Cityworks to assist in reduced spending and increased efficiency of work crews. With an already mature and developed GIS, the City realized the benefits that only Cityworks, being GIS-centric, could provide.

“Cityworks is the perfect solution for us to incorporate GIS users from customer service to supervisors to line-level operators,” stated Phil Mielke, Interim GIS Administrator at the City of Redlands. “Information is easily accessible and delivered through a clear and easy-to-use interface. Reports give decision makers the information they need to be able make informed decisions about where work is being done, what materials are used, and how much money is being spent for work orders grouped by any date interval required. Cityworks saves the City of Redlands money and is a great way to make the power of GIS accessible to a broader group of users.”

Beginning their RIS, Redland’s project outline was provided. Each week web meetings hosted by Azteca Project Manager, Matt Harman, via the GoToMeeting software produced by Citrix Systems trained staff on how to configure the Cityworks topic for that week. The live interaction allowed more effective training so that as the project progressed, the staff gained the knowledge necessary to perform the remaining tasks to complete the configuration of the software.

“The web meetings via GoToMeeting were so convenient and very helpful during the implementation process of Cityworks,” said Marc Rolle, Database Analyst at Redlands. “There was no lag in connectivity whatsoever! Having the capability to view each other’s computer screen makes it much easier to learn the system remotely. It seemed as if Matt was sitting next to me showing me what to do. Also, we were able to record the meetings (both audio and visual), so if we need a refresher of how to do things, we simply go back to the recordings and follow the step-by-step solutions that Matt illustrated to us.”

At this time, Redlands is currently running live with service requests and are in the final stages of completing their work order implementation, the majority of which they were able to complete themselves due to the training Mr. Rolle and other staff members received via the RIS sessions. In finalizing the plan to “Go Live” with work orders in the near future, Redlands now has a base of knowledge to implement additional departments as time permits over the coming months. At a later date, on-site training will be conducted for the remaining end users.

“Redlands has experienced a successful remote implementation of Cityworks along with many of our users,” states Brian Haslam, President of Azteca Systems. “RIS is an excellent option for municipalities looking for a cost-effective and hands-on implementation of Cityworks. We realize this is an excellent, ideal option for many users and hope to see it utilized more and more in the future. In addition, we are always pleased when a client who fully appreciates the benefits of GIS discovers our software, reaping the benefits Cityworks provides being the only fully GIS-centric product available.”
