Burbank Water and Power uses GO! Sync Mobile GIS for One-Call Locating

Carlsbad, CA, July 27, 2009 Burbank Water and Power (BWP) expanded its use of GO! Sync Mobile GIS to receive, locate, manage, and complete underground service alert (USA) tickets. The result is a streamlined, automated workflow that leverages BWP’s geographic information system (GIS) and eliminates troublesome paper.

BWP, already using GO! Sync Mobile GIS in both its electric and water departments for viewing, sketching, and inspecting, had a goal to improve its USA ticket operations with a GIS-enabled solution. With approximately 3,000 USA tickets a year and a paper filing process, BWP’s vision required an enterprise database, integration with GIS, and a mobile application.

To automate this process and meet its vision, GO! Sync Mapbook with the Ticket Integration Extension was introduced in 2009. Using mobile GIS, locators with laptops automatically receive service alert tickets sent from the state’s one call center. Color coded tickets are available in electronic format, displayed on a map, and worked using intuitive functionality. As status is updated, the tickets are automatically synchronized with BWP’s enterprise database, which is used for storage, analysis and reporting. Paper is replaced with software.

“Burbank Water and Power has a successful history of using GO! Sync Mobile GIS to create tangible benefits in our field operations,” states Tom Lutgen, GIS Coordinator. “It was natural to seek this same type of impact in our USA upgrade project where information from GIS plays a vital role.”

Using GO! Sync Mobile GIS for one-call automation is one of its many advantages. With Mapbook for viewing, the Redline Extension for Sketching, the Inspection Extension for inspecting, and the Ticket Integration Extension for displaying work tickets on the map, GO! Sync Mobile GIS is used across the nation by large and small organizations. It is affordable, straightforward to deploy, and built with ESRI technology for organizations invested in ArcGIS.
