MIPS32® Processor Powers Innovative DTV Platform from NXP

MIPS-Based™ Single-Chip Solution Extends Superior Viewing Experience

SUNNYVALE, Calif. — June 30, 2009 — MIPS Technologies, Inc. (NasdaqGS: MIPS), a leading provider of industry-standard processor architectures and cores for home entertainment, communications, networking and portable multimedia markets, today announced that NXP Semiconductors leveraged the MIPS32® 24KEfTM core for the world's first digital TV processor in 45nm technology, the PNX85500. The PNX85500 processor is the driving force behind the NXP TV550 global single-chip digital TV platform that enables manufacturers to offer a host of sophisticated HDTV features and access to internet content with unparalleled picture quality.

According to market research firm In-Stat in a May 2009 report, there are currently 124 million digital cable TV subscriber households around the world, an increase of 27% over the past year - a number that is forecasted to more than double by 2013.

"NXP's TV550 is a powerful single chip LCD TV platform. Supporting global digital TV switchovers, it offers advanced programming, Ethernet and CI+ security features to ease the delivery of IPTV content, including emerging on-demand TV services, from service providers straight to the TV set," said Shanthi Padmanabhan, vice president and innovation & technology manager of the Home Business Unit, NXP Semiconductors. "We have collaborated with MIPS Technologies for many years on the development of high-performance solutions for digital TV systems. We're confident that the MIPS-Based PNX85500 - an industry first - will further leverage our combined expertise to broaden and heighten the consumer experience for millions of DTV users around the world."

"Our long and successful relationship with NXP has contributed significantly to MIPS Technologies' solid position in the DTV market," said Art Swift, vice president of marketing, MIPS Technologies. "We're pleased that the MIPS architecture is a critical component of NXP's latest design innovation that has the potential to extend that market penetration, as global demand for DTV continues to rise."

The MIPS32 24KETM core family leverages the high performance 24KTM microarchitecture while incorporating the MIPS® DSP Application-Specific Extension (ASE). These instructions improve signal processing performance up to 200 percent over a range of embedded applications when compared to RISC implementations without the DSP ASE. The 24KE family significantly reduces overall SoC die area, cost and power consumption. The 24KE core family is supported by a complete suite of software development tools, the MIPS DSP Library and a third-party DSP applications network. This enables SoC designers to work in a single design environment and lower system costs by migrating DSP functionality onto a 24KE core. The 24KEf core adds hardware floating point support that is fully compliant with IEEE 754.
