Northern BC GIS Users Group Wins ESRI Canada’s Award of Excellence

Prince George, BC – June 3, 2009 – The Northern BC GIS Users Group received ESRI Canada’s Award of Excellence at the Regional User Conference in Prince George, BC earlier today. The award was presented to recognize the Group’s success in connecting GIS users across Northern BC, providing a local network of support and a platform to share knowledge.

The Northern BC GIS Users Group is a not-for-profit organization that aims to promote the use of GIS and connect people working in spatial enterprises so that they can exchange ideas, network, and keep abreast of a rapidly changing industry.

“This award recognizes the Group’s commitment to spreading the word about GIS in Northern BC and supporting users from many different industries,” said Jim Wickson, Vice President of Sales and Professional Services, ESRI Canada. “They provide a unique opportunity for larger government and academic institutions to mentor smaller organizations and help them keep-up to-date on the latest software products available.”

The Group holds regular conferences and workshops where GIS users from government, academia, industry and First Nations come together to discuss the latest industry trends and challenges. Participants with comprehensive GIS experience share information to help other participants integrate the technology into their own infrastructure.

“Software in the GIS industry is constantly evolving,” said Birthe Miller, BC Timber Sales GIS Analyst and co-founder of the Northern BC GIS User Group. “Our Group ensures that GIS users in remote communities are kept up-to-date on industry changes and that everyone from students to users working in large provincial organizations can benefit from the latest that GIS has to offer.”

Despite budget and resourcing limitations that are faced by most Northern community groups, the Northern BC GIS Users Group has proven to be a viable and resourceful entity that continues to increase in overall numbers.
