Colorado Springs, Colorado, May 4, 2009 - Sanborn, a leading provider of geospatial solutions, announces the award of the State of Virginia, Virginia Base Mapping Program (VBMP) for the period of 2009 to 2012. Sanborn had been the vendor of choice for the period of 2005-2008. In the current program, Sanborn will continue to provide statewide orthophotography base mapping. The program includes other geospatial framework data beyond orthophotography with buy-ups for higher resolution imagery, and over a dozen optional products such as LiDAR, planimetric data and 3D buildings. The program is a resource for state and local governments as well as private commercial entities.
“We are pleased to continue this critical program in support of VGIN”, says John Copple CEO of Sanborn. “This program provides up-to-date data and information products to many of their participants, enabling them to solve problems with geospatial applications.”
The Virginia Geographic Information Network division (VGIN) is in charge of maintaining the statewide orthoimagery base map, which is essential to the success of Virginia Information Technologies Agency’s (VITA’s) Integrated Services Program, in providing critical support for public safety initiatives.
VGIN was established in 1997 in Virginia Code to “foster the creative utilization of geographic information and oversee the development of a catalog of GIS data available in the Commonwealth”. VGIN’s geospatial products and services include the statewide metadata and data clearinghouse portal, GISData.Virginia.Gov, base mapping from the Virginia Base Mapping Program such as aerial photography, road centerlines and other base map data, hosted web mapping services and applications, and geospatial needs assessment and project management services.
