Woodland Hills, Calif. – March 9, 2009 – Dassault Systèmes (DS) (Euronext Paris: #13065, DSY.PA), a world leader in 3D and Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) solutions, recently signed a contract with NASCAR team Michael Waltrip Racing (MWR), to provide PLM solutions to support every phase of Waltrip’s design processes, from initial concept to production. The contract includes CATIA for virtual product design and analysis and ENOVIA SmarTeam to collaboratively manage engineering processes between all users.
Team Technical Director Nick Hughes brought considerable experience with DS PLM technology to his position at Waltrip. “My past experience with CATIA has shown it to shave 70 percent off digital model assembly time compared to other technologies. We look forward to using virtualization at MWR to give us an edge in this ultra-competitive sport.”
CATIA will allow Waltrip to develop high performance race cars through virtual testing rather than building costly, full-scale physical prototypes. In addition, by complementing CATIA with ENOVIA SmarTeam, Waltrip will be able to securely capture, manage and reuse corporate product knowledge to facilitate innovation and maintain product quality while reducing costs and time-to-market.
“NASCAR rules change frequently, and you don’t always have time to get the car out onto the track,” Hughes explains. “Therefore, the ability to simulate modifications prior to applying them to the car can make a big difference. Also, racecars are expensive! By simulating a change before implementing it, we can control costs and save time in the shop.”
“Toyota Motor Company has been working with our PLM solution set since 2002,” said Kendall Pond, vice president, Business Development, Dassault Systèmes. “We are glad to bring this expertise to Toyota’s motorsports teams and commend Waltrip for making this commitment to being a technology leader in this field.”
Motorsports Drivers for Michael Waltrip Racing include David Reutimann, Josh Wise and team owner Michael Waltrip. The team is headquartered in Cornelius, N.C., and races Toyota Camrys with engines designed by Toyota Racing Development USA.
