3D Laser Mapping launches global mine safety monitoring centre

February 10, 2009 --The safety of mines around the world can now be monitored from a Global Operations Centre in Nottingham, UK. The innovation by 3D Laser Mapping uses the latest web and laser mapping technology to remotely monitor mining operations from as far afield as Africa, Australia and South America. Data is already being continuously streamed from gold, platinum and diamond mines in Africa that use 3D Laser Mapping’s SiteMonitor mine monitoring system.

SiteMonitor combines the latest laser scanning technology with sophisticated software to capture and continuously analyse highly accurate measurements pit walls and mined material. It is used to improve safety and optimise production at mines around the world. With millions of measurements every minute, the Global Operations Centre technicians monitor system performance and check the data for consistency.

“We have designed this support service around the latest Internet technology which allows us to remotely access the international network of SiteMonitor installations,” commented Dr Graham Hunter, Managing Director of 3D Laser Mapping. “Monitoring data is continuously streamed to our Global Operations Centre where experienced support technicians scrutinise the information to ensure each system is operating correctly and the data presented to the onsite engineers can aid and support what is often critical decision making. By offering 24/7 remote support we are simply acting as another pair of eyes and ears for our users.”

The SiteMonitor laser scanning system includes the latest long range laser scanners, which can capture up to 11,000 point measurements per second, to an accuracy of 10mm and at a range of up to 1,000 metres. A rugged and fully portable sensor the system also includes a calibrated and accurately orientated high-resolution digital camera. The data captured is analysed using 3D Laser Mapping’s SiteMonitor analysis software, which tracks and compares displacement measurements over time, providing early warning of abnormal movement and therefore potential failures in the active mining area that may impact on production, cause damage to equipment or even injury to personnel.

The 3D Laser Mapping Premium Support package, which includes installation and training together with site visits and remote support and monitoring, is designed to support SiteMonitor users in their day to day operations, ensuring the system is operating correctly and the data presented to the front line engineers is robust and fit for purpose.

3D Laser Mapping is a global developer of laser scanning solutions for sectors such as mapping, mining and manufacturing. 3D Laser Mapping specialises in integrating laser scanning hardware with their own software and peripherals to create solutions at the cutting edge of technology.
