ERDAS at the Workshop on the Use of GIS/OGC Standards in Meteorology

Norcross (Georgia, USA ) - November 19, 2008 - ERDAS will be participating in the Workshop on the Use of GIS/OGC Standards in Meteorology, 24-26 November 2008, in Reading , UK . Jointly organized by the European Center for Medium-Range Weather Forecast (ECMWF), the UK Met Office and Météo France, this workshop will examine achievements based on the Open Geospatial Consortium’s standards in order to see how they can benefit meteorology.

An OGC member and a recognized expert of interoperable geospatial web services, ERDAS was invited to demonstrate the capabilities of open standards-based spatial data infrastructures. Emmanuel Mondon, Enterprise Solutions Sales Manager EMEA, ERDAS, will be a speaker, presenting “Case Studies on Cataloguing and Serving Meteorological Metadata and Data using OGC/ISO Standards”.

In 2007, ECMWF’s Workshop on Meteorological Operational Systems gave rise to recommendations to study standards in use in the geospatial domain, to increase interoperability between meteorological services. In 2008, the expected outcome of the ECMWF workshop is a roadmap for the creation of common reference implementation of OGC-compliant web services for meteorological data, with the ultimate goal of submitting recommendations to the World Meteorological Organization.

“Undeniably, Earth-based information and atmospheric phenomena are tightly bound,” said Vincent Dessard, Senior Vice President, Business Development, ERDAS. “As global warming and climate hazards create complex challenges to governments and organizations, we can only encourage initiatives to make weather forecast data infrastructures interoperable with spatial data infrastructures. A Strategic Member of the OGC, ERDAS supports the interoperability endeavor of the ECMWF and will pay particular attention to the progress of their work.”
