Silicon Graphics Ushers In New Age of Visualization with VUE

VUE Software Empowers Technical, Commercial and Consumer Users to VUE Anything, Anywhere, Any Way You Want

SUNNYVALE, Calif., (Oct. 28, 2008) — Silicon Graphics, Inc. (NASDAQ: SGIC) today launched Silicon Graphics® VUE, a suite of software visualization solutions that changes the way you create, distribute and use visual information.

With VUE software, Silicon Graphics brings the power of famed SGI® Reality Center® immersive environments to your own laptop, desktop or mobile device. VUE software solutions combine visual information from any source application or platform, fuse it into an intuitive three-dimensional viewing experience, and securely deliver that experience to anyone — on whatever device they choose.

"We live in a visual world," said Robert Pette, vice president, Visualization Group, Silicon Graphics. "From streaming media and gaming to complex models and simulations, visual information is changing the way we analyze and experience data. The challenge is to aggregate, render and deliver real-time visual information to global users in a way that best suits their needs. That's the advantage of VUE."

"One of the challenges here at LITE is to integrate multiple sources of visualization data into our display systems and venues, including our Reality Center and immersive theatre," said Dr. Carolina Cruz-Neira, executive director and chief scientist, Louisiana Immersive Technology Enterprise (LITE). "It will be very helpful to have a tool that allows us to achieve this integration in a very simple manner. Additionally, we need to both receive and integrate an external source that is coming over the network, as well as broadcast it from here and integrate it at some other remote location. The availability of a tool like VUE is going to open a lot of new opportunities and trends."

For today's users, VUE software offers a new way to experience visual information:

  • Commanders in decision support and operation centers (PDF 796K) combine images and video from satellites, UAVs and security cameras to gain an accurate picture of conditions. First responders and field operatives view and interact with that same information in real-time via a variety of mobile devices
  • Entertainment producers deliver immersive consumer experiences by merging multiple live video feeds into a single experience, empowering consumers to select their own personal viewing perspective in real time.
  • Product design teams (PDF 850K) collaborate across the globe for everything from daily interaction to company-wide design reviews. For example, colleagues in Munich, Tokyo and Los Angeles simultaneously view and interact with 3D product models, simulations and product plans, while videoconferencing within the same 3D viewing environment.
  • Pharmaceutical companies (PDF 1.1M) and university researchers interactively study how a new drug molecule attacks cancer cells, manipulating the same simulation using servers, PCs, notebooks, PDAs and cell phones.
  • Energy companies (PDF 1.0M) search for optimum energy sources, interactively viewing interrelated seismic, reservoir, well, production, real-time drilling operations and overall business information — accelerating analysis and decision making.

VUE Anything and Everything, Anywhere and On Any Device
The VUE family (PDF 173K) draws on more than a quarter-century of visual innovation (PDF 145K). VUE software helps customers overcome "information overload" and make better sense of all the information they have on hand — visually and simply.

Silicon Graphics VUE solutions are optimized for the SGI® Virtu™ family of server-based visualization solutions and can run on any industry-standard x86 computing platform, including the scalable computing power of SGI® Altix® servers, clusters and supercomputers.

VUE software solution components include:

  • FusionVUE™ (PDF 626K) dynamically integrates any kind of information in any combination from any source. FusionVUE presents information via an intuitive, contextual and 3-dimensional VUEspace™ environment.
  • SoftVUE™ transforms any standard computing system into an integrated compute and visualization platform, without specialized graphics hardware.
  • PowerVUE™ renders large scale visualization interactively and in real time.
  • RemoteVUE™  (PDF 551K) delivers visual information to any user, on any device, anywhere in the world.
  • EventVUE™ delivers unprecedented visibility into complex situations in real time, giving decision-makers a 360-degree view of complex events while avoiding information overload.
