Western Australia’s Department for Planning & Infrastructure Implementing ERDAS Photogrammetry Solutions

Norcross (Georgia, USA) – September 17, 2008 - Department for Planning & Infrastructure (DPI), a government agency in Western Australia has selected several ERDAS photogrammetry solutions for analyzing coastline movements, engineering, maritime facility mapping and nautical charting.

DPI builds networks to enrich the quality of life for all Western Australians, connecting and delivering economic and social networks. DPI integrates land and transport systems, provides an accessible and safe transport system to serviced land and infrastructure and ensures road users meet established vehicle standards and driver competencies.

DPI is implementing LPS, ERDAS’ signature photogrammetry solution that seamlessly integrates software tools to streamline production-mapping workflows. LPS will be used to capture coastline movement information from current aerial photography. Coastal engineers can use LPS to study areas of the coastline in 3D and make better informed decisions about potential coastline movement and infrastructure impacts.

IMAGINE Autosync enables DPI to rectify old imagery to accurate present day aerial mosaics. Because older photography does not have aero triangulation, this module removes the need for performing aero triangulation calculations. DPI also purchased Leica Geosystems’ TopoMouse™ Hand-held Controller, a high-performance, ergonomic free-hand device for digital photogrammetric workstations and Planar’s SD2420W 24" Widescreen Stereo/3D Monitor, which will enhance their stereo viewing experience.

“In the past, DPI has had problems locating accurate base spatial information. Instead of costly survey pickup of these facilities, costs are considerably reduced using photogrammetry for large scale pickup and onsite surveying for verification and small detail pickup,” said Ralph Talbot-Smith, Coordinator Cartography, Spatial Information Branch, DPI. “Ultimately, this combination of technology produces good base surface information, aiding lease plan publication and underground service identification. LPS also enables yearly updates of marine facilities, tracking any infrastructure added as part of development.”

“We are excited that DPI is implementing several of our photogrammetry solutions for coastline movements and engineering, maritime facility mapping and nautical charting,” said Kaushik Chakraborty, Vice President, Asia Pacific, ERDAS. “Nautical charting has used a manual stereoscope for many years to help define coastal structures, used as a guide for plotting boundaries in the 2D CAD environment. LPS streamlines the 3D data collection process, providing a more accurate and consistent delineation of coastline formations (e.g. reef platforms, underwater rocks etc). “
