Texas Instruments introduces video development platform reducing design time for broadcast equipment manufacturers

Fully integrated, field-hardened video software framework supports customizable video applications for broadcast service providers

AMSTERDAM, Netherlands, Sept. 12 /PRNewswire/ -- IBC -- Extending the capabilities of its broad suite of video solutions, Texas Instruments Incorporated (TI) (NYSE: TXN) today announced a video development platform that enables media gateway equipment manufacturers as well as the broadcast community to build customized multi-channel video solutions for next-generation video applications. Combining TI's TNETV3020 multicore digital signal processor (DSP), open-framework video software and a reference board, this video development platform reduces development time for multimedia processing equipment manufacturers. For more information, go to http://www.ti.com/videoinfrastructure.

"The TI Development Kit TNETV3020 is an impressive combination of low-cost hardware and a comprehensive, easy to use, high density software package," said George Kontopidis, vice president of engineering for NMS Communications. "TI has expanded its software offering beyond voice and video codecs by including framework software in support of packet processing. The TI Development Kit TNETV3020 provides an excellent environment for rapid development of voice and video gateway and transcoding solutions."

"As video content and mobile TV become increasingly pervasive, service providers require an efficient infrastructure that can deliver multiple video formats to many types of viewing devices. Optimized bandwidth utilization and power-saving 'green' capabilities also top the list of requirements," said Jagdish Rebello, director and principal analyst with iSuppli. "Further, our research predicted that video content will consume 45 percent of the available network bandwidth by 2012."

"TI's video development platform provides Signalogic(R) with high density video transcoding and transrating solutions for video-on-demand and real-time video streaming markets, including Internet, IPTV and mobile content providers," says Jeff Brower, CEO and president of Signalogic. "TI's video development platform provides us with the fastest track to market these solutions to our video customers."

Texas Instruments' video development platform supports today's codecs such as H.264, MPEG4 and H.263 with an eye towards tomorrow's requirements. These codecs are required to support 3G gateway, IMS Multimedia Servers and IPTV applications. Texas Instruments' open-framework video software platform also equips broadcast equipment designers with the freedom to build on an existing framework, customize applications and subsequently, reduce their development time and bill of material (BOM) costs.

"We now live in a video-driven YouTube(TM) society and TI is applying its video technology to respond to this market that will grow significantly in 2009," said John Smrstik, general manager of TI's video infrastructure business. "Our customers have asked for more flexibility combined with greater performance, enabling service providers to save precious network bandwidth. Our new video development platform meets these needs while speeding development."

Texas Instruments' TNETV3020 is a multicore DSP that easily meets the processing requirements of video media gateway, video transcoding, and video content management. The multi-level memory architecture of the TNETV3020 reduces the overall chip count and the optimized horsepower and flexibility of the DSP enables OEMs (original equipment manufacturers) to drastically increase channel density, improve quality of experience to subscribers and also easily adapt to dynamically changing video requirements. The software framework runs on the TNETV3020 platform, which is based on the C64x+(TM) DSP.

Availability

TI's video development platform is sampling now with target customers and will be available in 4Q08.
