Shavlik Protects Corporations from Unintended Installation of Apple's Safari for Windows Web Browser

ST. PAUL, Minn.—(BUSINESS WIRE)—April 4, 2008— Shavlik Technologies, LLC, the market leader in delivering software solutions that rapidly accelerate and continuously improve security and compliance readiness, today announced the ability for its Shavlik NetChk Protect users to protect themselves from security risks introduced via the unintended installation of Apple's Safari for Windows web browser. The new browser is automatically installed as part of a set of software updates to Apple's popular iTunes for Windows and QuickTime software applications and contains at least two critical, unpatched security vulnerabilities.

Shavlik NetChk Protect's application control capability enables users to easily identify and remove the vulnerable browser from their enterprise desktops and laptops, thereby securing these systems from security vulnerabilities that could occur if a user accessed an untrusted web site via the new Safari 3.1 for Windows browser. If left installed and unpatched, this vulnerability could allow malicious website operators to gain control of an unprotected user's system. Just this week, Shavlik delivered a new capability to its Shavlik NetChk Protect customers, allowing them to centrally detect and remove the Safari Windows browser, along with other unwanted or unapproved applications on user's desktops, to close system security gaps.

"Many iTunes users have inadvertently installed a vulnerable web browser on their system," said Eric Schultze, chief technology officer, Shavlik Technologies. "By installing the vulnerable browser, they have exposed their system and their company to serious security risks. Shavlik NetChk Protect users can now detect those systems with the unintended installation and can protect these systems by removing the unwanted browser software."

Shavlik's award-winning Shavlik NetChk Protect security software protects users from unwanted programs that enter corporate networks and negatively impact productivity, decrease available bandwidth, and compromise network security. IT managers can easily simplify the management of complex enterprise network security with Shavlik NetChk Protect, the industry's first solution for automating the management of critical security patches, spyware, malware and unwanted software applications from a single, simple-to-use console. A true enterprise solution, Shavlik NetChk Protect uses Active Vulnerability Management(TM) to maintain secure, policy-compliant networks through automatic and continuous Assessment, Remediation and Management.
