Lincolnshire maps its environment with GeoPerspectives aerial photography

March 22, 2007 -- Leicestershire, UK - Lincolnshire County Council has taken delivery of a GeoPerspectives aerial photomap for the whole of the county. The Council, one of the largest and fastest growing rural counties in the UK, initially purchased the aerial photomap for environmental mapping and updating of earlier surveys within its Conservation Services. However the usefulness of the data has lent itself to wider, corporate applications including property boundary information and promotion to the public of council led projects and services. Future plans by Lincolnshire include the integration of the GeoPerspectives imagery within ‘LincUp’ the online portal for services provided by Lincolnshire’s public authorities.

The GeoPerspectives imagery will be used within the Council’s corporate geographic information system (GIS). Covering about 6,000 sqkm Lincolnshire is the fourth largest county in the UK, is responsible for producing an estimated 20% of Britain’s food and has twice the national average net inward migration. The Council’s Conservation Services work to record, understand, advise on and manage the county’s heritage, landscape and biodiversity, improving the quality of life for people living, working or visiting this coastal East Midlands County.

“GeoPerspectives aerial imagery enables us to undertake and refine environmental mapping projects, such as Historic Landscape Characterisation and Phase I Habitat Survey, with ease and confidence,” said Jon Watson, Natural Environment Team Leader. “Aerial photography helps us to accurately monitor, record and manage some environmental resources throughout the county without leaving the office and is also a great tool for communicating with other organisations and the public.”

The Lincolnshire dataset, part of the GeoPerspectives image archive, dates from 2005 and 2003 and was supplied at 25cm resolution. The imagery was purchased from aerial mapping specialists BlueSky as map accurate digital image files for use within the Council’s GIS and will be used in conjunction with the Council’s Ordnance Survey mapping and previous aerial surveys.

GeoPerspectives is a joint venture between Infoterra and BlueSky providing national coverage of orthorectified aerial photography, digital terrain & surface models (DTM/DSM) for 3D modelling, and colour infra-red imagery (CIR) for vegetation analysis.
