Salford City Council selects Cadcorp software for new web-based GIS.

Cadcorp SIS desktop and Cadcorp GeognoSIS.NET web-based software provide council staff and the public with ready access to disparate mapping data

Stevenage, Herts. 23 January, 2007 –
Digital mapping and geographic information systems (GIS) software developer Cadcorp has announced that Salford City Council has selected Cadcorp SIS - Spatial Information System and Cadcorp GeognoSIS.NET software for the council’s new web-based GIS. The new facility has been developed to serve both the general public via the Internet and Salford City Council staff via the council’s corporate intranet, and is already in day-to-day use.

“Although we already have GIS facilities from four other vendors, we selected Cadcorp SIS and GeognoSIS.NET for our new web-based system because of the software’s openness, its flexibility and its ability to work with data from the other systems that we use, without the need for additional-cost data translation software,” said David Hunter, assistant director, ICT Services (Business Transformation), Salford City Council. “This means that irrespective of the source of the data, users both within the council and in the community see a single, unified GIS environment. This makes it easier for all users to access the mapping data they are looking for,” he explained.

Cadcorp SIS Map Modeller desktop software is being used by the council’s GIS manager and database administrators for data management and conversion tasks, but the main aspect of the implementation is the Internet/intranet web mapping capability which has been developed on GeognoSIS.NET. Everyone within the council and outside in the community who needs to access data stored in the council’s Oracle Spatial-based data warehouse will do so via the new web-mapping interface.

Various applications that are currently available to council staff via the corporate intranet have been GIS-enabled. These include those accessing Salford City Council’s planning data, environmental health and education data, street works data, and local land and property gazetteer (LLPG). In addition, the new web-based interactive map service for the general public provides a variety of map layers, at varying scales. These include Ordnance Survey MasterMap®, aerial photography, boundaries, council facilities, other facilities, highways, planning applications, and ward information.

Among the benefits that Salford City Council expects to get from its new GeognoSIS.NET-based GIS are greatly improved data sharing between council departments, leading to improved and faster decision-making; improved communication between the council and the general public through ready access to useful and current information; and the provision of better management information. In the future, the ability to receive service requests and fault reports from the public via the Internet will help the council to further improve its service delivery levels.

“We are delighted to add Salford City Council to our already extensive list of UK local government customers,” said Mike O’Neil, managing director, Cadcorp. “The council’s choice of Cadcorp SIS on the desktop, and GeognoSIS.NET for its web-based GIS, is another demonstration of the importance to GIS users worldwide of the data interoperability capability that Cadcorp software offers, out-of-the-box.”
