Sanborn To Update National Hydrography Datasets For Multiple States Under USGS Cartographic Services Contract-2 Program

Colorado Springs, Colo., November 17, 2005 — John Copple, CEO of Sanborn, an industry leader in GIS, photogrammetric mapping and remote sensing solutions today announced that the company has received task orders to update National Hydrography Datasets (NHD) for Alaska, Maine and Washington as part of an ongoing five-year IDIQ contract with USGS.

Sanborn, in conjunction with L-3 Titan, a leading provider of comprehensive information and communications systems solutions to federal government customers, will support the needs of the USGS National Map, other USGS disciplines, Environmental Protection Agency, US Forest Service, Bureau of Land Management, and other partners.

The project includes data conversion by extracting current data layers and updating NHD content for accuracy, ensuring connectivity and network flow, naming authentication and features based on the original data annotation.

The NHD is a comprehensive set of digital spatial data that contains information about surface water features such as lakes, ponds, streams, rivers, springs and wells. Within the NHD, surface water features are combined to form “reaches,” which provide the framework for linking water-related data to the NHD surface water drainage network. These linkages enable the analysis and display of these water-related data in upstream and downstream order.

With uniform national hydrography datasets, Sanborn deliverables enhance information sharing between users at the national, state, and local levels. The NHD products have proven useful for water-quality studies and multi-use hydrographic modeling.
