Point2 Technology Joins MOPA

Point2 joins Ericsson, Coherent, Lumentum, Macom, NEC, Nokia, Sumitomo Electric, and Semtech in creating standards for mobile optics.

SAN JOSE, Calif., July 16, 2024 –  Point2 Technology, a leading provider of ultra-low-power, low-latency mixed-signal SoC solutions for multi-terabit interconnect, today announced it has joined the Mobile Optical Pluggables Alliance (MOPA) founded by Ericsson, Nokia, Sumitomo Electric, Coherent, Lumentum, and Semtech.

“As 5G backhaul and access networks transition from 10G to 25G, and eventually to 50G speeds, the fiber optic infrastructure will need to be upgraded for long distances at low power and latency while minimizing total cost of ownership (TCO),” said Sean Park, CEO of Point2. “With the electronic dispersion compensation (EDC) mixed-signal SoC and the RangeXtenderTM module platform, Point2 has shown that the infrastructure can be upgraded seamlessly and cost-effectively. We look to build upon our expertise within MOPA and help the wireless industry expand its reach.”

With total global mobile data traffic expected to reach 313 exabytes per month by 2029, network providers are looking for infrastructure components that help them achieve high-bandwidth data transmission while minimizing power consumption and cost. MOPA brings together industry leaders to develop requirements and standards for optical pluggables to underpin high-performance 5G and future 6G network buildouts.

“Point2 will bring an innovative perspective to MOPA on optical interconnect build-out for wireless infrastructure to mitigate common challenges in 5G and future 6G network infrastructure deployment,” said Stefan Dahlfort, MOPA President. “We look forward to welcoming Point2 in the Alliance to enhance technical deliverables and bring new optical interconnect solutions for the wireless industry.”
