Leica Geosystems Survey Points to Increased Reliance on Laser Scanning in 2021 Among Architecture, Engineering and Construction Professionals

Community Shares and Ranks Most Widely Used Measurement Tools on Job Sites

Heerbrugg, Switzerland – November 17, 2020 – Leica Geosystems, part of Hexagon, industry leader in measurement technology, recently conducted a survey on social media among architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) professionals. The survey inquired about the tools they most often use to measure and document a space and about their purchasing intentions of laser scanner technology.

Based on the results, laser scanners continue to be the preferred way to measure and document spaces. In responses to the question, “What do you use to measure and document a space?” Laser scanners were preferred by 69 percent of respondents, followed by tape measures at 19 percent. Other tools that are often used on the job are laser distance meters and cameras, which were tied at six percent in the survey.

Of those in the AEC community that currently use a laser scanner, 59 percent own one while more than a quarter of the audience, 26 percent, rent. The remaining 15 percent of respondents said they need to learn more about both.

When it comes to laser scanning purchasing decisions over the next 12 months, 38 percent responded “very likely” followed by 11 percent answering “likely.”  While 30 percent were still unsure at the time of the survey, only 22 percent said a laser scanner purchase in the next year was not likely.

These responses reflect the growing adoption of laser scanners. In a recent Markets and Markets survey, 3D scanner market is expected to grow from USD 3.41 billion in 2016 to USD 5.90 billion by 2023, at a CAGR of 7.8% during the forecast period.

“When it comes to accuracy and not having to return to a job site to re-take measurements, the efficiency gains are significant. This results in more profitable projects and more satisfied clients,” said Kevin Rinaldi-Young, director of content marketing, Leica Geosystems.  “As more companies see the longer term ROI of laser scanners, we are likely to see the use of tape measures steadily decline over the next five years.”
