Construction Innovation Expo 2019 Officially Opens

CIC Construction Innovation Award 2019 Honours the Industry for Excellence In Innovation and Technology

HONG KONG, Dec. 19, 2019 — (PRNewswire) — The Construction Innovation Expo 2019 (CIExpo) which was jointly organised by the Development Bureau (DEVB) and Construction Industry Council (CIC), and supported by Centre of Science and Technology Industrial Development (CSTID), Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development (MOHURD) of the People's Republic of China has officially opened at Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre. The CIC Construction Innovation Award 2019 was concurrently held to showcase the most advanced construction technologies and enable co-creation of innovative solutions for sustainable development of the industry.

The Chief Executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR), Mrs. Carrie LAM, Vice Minister of MOHURD, Mr. YI Jun, Secretary for Development of the Government of the HKSAR, Mr. Michael WONG and Chairman of the CIC, Mr. CHAN Ka-kui, Chairperson of CIC's Committee on Productivity, Ir YU Shek-man, and Executive Director of the CIC, Ir Albert CHENG together with other honourable guests, jointly officiated the Grand Opening Ceremony and witnessed the signing of Memorandum of Understanding between the CIC and CSTID.

Speaking at the ceremony, Mrs. Carrie LAM recognised Hong Kong innovation technology as a significant driving force for the development of Greater Bay Area. "The adoption of technology has created opportunities for cross-boundary collaboration, notably within the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area. Innovation and technology (I&T) is one of the key areas for the Greater Bay Area development. We see the potential of Hong Kong in playing a key role in this aspect, hence we have been investing heavily in I&T and related industries," she said.

Mr. CHAN Ka-kui believed that the CIExpo can be a driving force for sustainable construction development. "We hope this Expo will inspire participants and visitors for further innovation and technology advancement, more importantly, for a better construction industry globally," he said.

The 4-day CIExpo from 17 to 20 December has attracted 228 local and overseas organisations from 15 countries and regions to participate. It features four key themes, namely Offsite Construction, Robotics and Automation, Digital Solutions, and Advanced Technologies and Materials, with a target for attracting 10,000 visitors. About 40 experts, academics, government officials and entrepreneurs from local and overseas engineering backgrounds are invited to speak at four international conferences about "Building Information Modelling (BIM)", "Modular Integrated Construction (MiC)", "Design for Manufacture and Assembly (DfMA), Robotics and Automation" and "Building Asia Forum". Ten technical tours will also be arranged to demonstrate local innovative buildings including MiC Display Centre, CIC -- Zero Carbon Park, CIC BIM Space, Happy Valley Underground Stormwater Storage Tank, Hong Kong Drainage Tunnel Project, revitalisation projects at Shanghai Street and Lee Tung Street as well as T - Park (a sludge treatment facility), etc.  

The CIC has also announced the winners of the CIC Construction Innovation Award 2019. The Award, honoured the outstanding innovative initiatives of the local and international industry leaders and academics, consists of three categories: "Construction Productivity", "Construction Safety" and "Construction Sustainability" with a total of 12 awards including International Grand Prize, Local Grand Prize and Young Innovator Prize were presented. The International Grand Prize went to "Transforma Robotics" from Transforma Robotics, which is a spin-off company from Nanyang Technological University, Singapore; while the Local Grand Prize went to "Yau Lee High Rise Concrete MiC System" from Architectural Services Department of the Government of HKSAR and Yau Lee Group joint venture.
