Municipal Police of Ensenada Reduce Crime Rate by 10 Percent Through Use of Cape-enabled Drones

Equipped with Cape Aerial Telepresence, drones drive significant improvements in both police force operations and community safety

REDWOOD CITY, Calif., June 12, 2018 — (PRNewswire) —

REDWOOD CITY, Calif., June 12, 2018 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ --  Cape, the leading cloud platform for drone telepresence and data management, today announced that the Ensenada Municipal Police Department (DSMP) decreased crime rates by more than 10 percent through the use of commercial drones equipped with Cape Aerial Telepresence technology. Within the first four months of operation, more than 1600 flights were completed, resulting in drastically reduced call response times, resource and time savings, and improved safety and protection of the city's officers and first responders, and the community of Ensenada, Mexico.

With more than half a million residents and an increasing reputation as a major tourist hub, the protection of area residents and visitors is a critical priority for DSMP. Since October 2017, the police force has used Cape-enabled drones across its daily operations, including ongoing patrol and crime prevention, emergency call and incident response, and search and rescue.

The city's use of drones has led to dramatic public safety improvements, including a 30% decrease in home robberies, 25% drop in violent robberies, and 22% decrease in vehicle theft. Since launch, more than 513 arrests have been directly attributed to drone use. Additionally, with the ability to arrive on scene to any call within the drone coverage area in roughly one minute, the use of Cape-enabled drones has reduced non-emergency call response times by 95% and emergency call response times by 90%.

"Working with Cape, we have achieved results that have previously been unachievable," said Marco Antonio Novelo Osuna, Mayor of Ensenada. "Drones have proven instrumental in helping our officers and first responders, taking criminals off the streets, and most importantly, keeping our community safe. We are extremely proud of what we have already accomplished with Cape, and are excited to expand our use of drones throughout the county of Ensenada."

Each day, the drone is placed in locations around the city based on call volume data, and is launched by an officer in the Police Operations Center (COP). Today, upwards of 25 flights take place per day, with the drones providing more than 6 hours of real-time aerial observation over the city, 6 days per week. As calls come in, the drone can also be launched or redirected to the call location for incident response and to aid in search and rescue efforts. All on-duty officers can quickly and easily access the live, HD video captured by the drone through the Cape app on their computers or mobile devices, giving them full situational visibility.

"Drones are one of the most impactful tools available to today's law enforcement and public safety agencies, and the success in Ensenada is further proof of that," said Chris Rittler, CEO of Cape. "In the future, drones will be the common denominator across cities with the lowest crime rates in the world. We are proud to be the trusted technology partner for cities like Ensenada who are at the forefront of drone innovation."

The DSPM is now expanding its use of Cape-enabled drones after quickly seeing the dramatic impact on both police operations and the safety of the Ensenada community. Building on its successful partnership with the city of Ensenada, Cape is among the select number of private sector companies selected for the UAS Integration Pilot Program, and will be helping to define the future of commercial drone integration in the U.S. in partnership with the city of San Diego and the Chula Vista Police Department. Furthering its reputation as one of the leaders in the drone software space, Cape is one of the first and only companies in the U.S. to be awarded precedent-setting waivers under both Section 333 and Part 107 regulations, and has performed more than 100,000 flights in the U.S., Middle East, Mexico, and New Zealand, with zero incidents.
