Calling All Indie Game Developers! The Label’s Indie Showdown Contest Returns!

The 2018 Indie Showdown Returns to GDC to Feature the World’s Best Independent Game Making Talent

SAN FRANCISCO — (BUSINESS WIRE) — January 25, 2018 — The annual GDC Indie Showdown, brought to you by The Label, gives the world’s top indie game making talent the chance to win one of the top three prizes including the grand prize of $12,500. Select finalists will have the opportunity to showcase their work at the San Francisco Game Developer’s Conference and discuss a future publishing deal. Four finalists from the 2017 contest opted to join The Label.

The 2018 Indie Showdown contest (formerly known as IndiePlus) is open for submissions and the top 10 games will be revealed on March 12. The three winners will be announced at The Label’s GDC Party on March 19, 2018 in San Francisco. Submissions will be judged on craftsmanship – its design, technical, visual, and audio elements – as well as innovative elements, fun factor and mobile functionality. The full panel of judges will be announced soon; the team of experts includes last year’s winner, Itay Keren of Untame, Dave Brevik, Diablo co-creator, and Greg Essig with The Label.

“The Indie Showdown contest was created to find and introduce the world to new game making talent and amazing original content,” said Greg Essig, Head of Artists and Repertoire (A&R) at The Label. “The last four years we’ve seen a tremendous amount of submissions and traction with indie game makers.”

The Indie Showdown has funded and brought to life multiple breakout mobile hits including last year’s winners: Mushroom 11 by Untame, Old Man’s Journey by Broken Rules, and Bring You Home by Alike Studios.

The Label is partnering not only with the best indie developers that we all know, such as Ed McMillen, creator of Super Meat Boy and Binding of Isaac; Mark Rubin, lead of Call of Duty; Asher Vollmer, creator of THREES!; and Will Stallwood / Dain Saint, creator of Tailwind, but also with the best indie developers yet to be discovered, achieved through the Indie Showdown Contest.

Highlighted rules for the 2018 Indie Showdown:

  • Pre-launch: Your game must not be launched worldwide.
  • Indie: You must not have a publisher or signed publishing agreement.
  • Original: You must own 75% of the showcased IP.
