Navigant Research Names Microsoft, Amazon, IBM, and PTC Leading IoT Platform Providers

Successful IoT platform vendors will cut through the complexities of IoT deployments and distance themselves from the pack, report finds

BOULDER, Colo. — (BUSINESS WIRE) — December 19, 2017 — A new Leaderboard Report from Navigant Research examines the strategy and execution of 15 Internet of Things (IoT) platform providers, with Microsoft, Amazon, IBM, and PTC rated the highest across 10 criteria.

Utilities and large enterprises using IoT technologies rely on an ecosystem of vendors to help them harness an increasing number of connected devices, processes, and large data volumes that can unlock valuable business insights through analytics tools. As demand for IoT technology increases, many vendors have cobbled together IoT platforms as a foundational solution that promises to bring order, control, and economic advantages. Click to tweet: According to a new Leaderboard report from @NavigantRSRCH, Microsoft, Amazon, IBM, and PTC are the leading IoT platform providers.

“The crowded IoT value chain has attracted numerous platform vendors, each trying to grab a piece of what has so far been a fragmented market,” says Neil Strother, principal research analyst with Navigant Research. “The leaders in this segment have developed IoT platforms that enable customers to better harness large data sets from devices and sensors, and then turn that data into useful business outcomes.”

The challenge for these vendors, however, is to cut through the complexities of IoT deployments, and distance themselves from the pack. According to the report, vendors with innovative and differentiated products that become standard across a particular industrial sector, or sectors, will have the market advantage.

The report, Navigant Research Leaderboard: IoT Platform Vendors, examines the Strategy and Execution of 15 vendors offering IoT platforms relevant to utilities and other industries taking on digital transformation projects. These vendors are rated on 10 criteria: vision; go-to-market strategy; partners; technology; geographic reach; sales, marketing, and distribution; solution performance; product portfolio; pricing; and staying power. Using Navigant Research’s proprietary Leaderboard methodology, vendors are profiled, rated, and ranked with the goal of providing industry participants with an objective assessment of these companies’ relative strengths and weaknesses in the IoT platform market. An Executive Summary of the report is available for free download on the Navigant Research website.
