Mobility on Demand: Demand-driven transport

PTV Group develops new mobility concept as part of the RegioMOVE flagship project

Karlsruhe, Germany, 14, December 2017. The entire range of mobility services at your fingertips. This is the aim of the RegioMOVE project commissioned by the Karlsruhe Verkehrsverbund (KVV) and funded by the State of Baden-Wuerttemberg and the European Fund for Regional development (EFRE) with around five million euros. Regional partners will jointly develop a new mobility concept which combines different mobility services in order to ensure easier access to transport. As one of the project partners, PTV Group will model Mobility-as-a-Service offerings, evaluate new operating strategies, such as ride pooling, provide the technology for the multimodal information system and plan the design of novel mobility stations.

“Mobility solutions should be easily consumed as a service,” explains Vincent Kobesen, CEO of PTV Group. The three-year research project was launched in December. It aims to lay the foundation for the development of a multimodal transport network, including technology and infrastructure.

Mobility on Demand: Demand-driven transport

In the future, mobility should be offered as a service. Mobility as a Service (MaaS) is the big topic. Actual transport demand thereby becomes the pivotal issue when developing appropriate mobility schemes. In addition to the traditional modes of transport (walking, cycling, motorized private transport and public transport), mobility-as-a-service concepts (including car- and bike-sharing as well as ride pooling) will be analysed from the road users’ point of view. The aim is to understand the impact of mobility stations and services on infrastructure, traffic and transport.

Simulation of operating concepts in the field of car sharing and ride pooling

To obtain operational data on vehicle fleets required for the implementation of innovative and climate-friendly service concepts, system- and service-related specifications (e.g. maximum waiting times, detours, pick-up/drop-off concepts) will be outlined based on the development of the regional transport demand and mobility services. A transport model will be used to simulate these concepts, including intermodal routes.

PTV Group’s mobility experts will help design new mobility stations, so-called ports, and provide the basic technology for a comprehensive, multimodal travel information system.  The model- and planning-based tasks of the ‘Port’ work package will be executed in partnership with Karlsruhe University of Applied Sciences and the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT).

Kobesen confirms: “We are all excited about being part of this flagship project of the Karlsruhe Technology Region and are looking forward to shaping future mobility with our newly developed software for MaaS (Mobility as a Service).”

Background information:

The Consortium in charge of the implementation of the RegioMOVE project consists of KVV, the Regionalverband Mittlerer Oberrhein (RVMO), KIT, Karlsruhe University of Applied Sciences, FZI Forschungszentrum Informatik, raumobil GmbH, PTV Group, INIT GmbH, Stadtmobil CarSharing, the City of Karlsruhe and the District of Rastatt. As one of 21 flagship projects participating in the national RegioWIN competition, the RegioMOVE project won the award in 2015.

"The mobility services, which should be made available in the near future through RegioMOVE, represent a real added value for the passengers using our transport network. RegioMOVE will allow us to combine different mobility options comfortably from a single source,” emphasizes Dr. Alexander Pischon, KVV Managing Director.
