OGC invites you to its Testbed 13 Demonstration Event

OGC will demonstrate cutting edge geo-technology relating to Cloud Computing, Big Data, Semantics, 3D Streaming, and GEOINT Profiles.

8 October 2017:
 The
Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC®) invites members and the public to attend the OGC Testbed 13 demonstration of the outcomes of its latest Innovation Program initiative on December 12-13 2017 at USGS National Center in Reston, VA, USA.

The Testbed 13 sponsors outlined specific interoperability problems across the areas of Cross Community Interoperability, Dynamic Source Integration, Earth Observation Clouds, Streaming & 3D Data, and Compliance Testing.

Geospatial technology leaders from 31 participating member organizations came together to prototype solutions to the sponsors’ interoperability requirements, using existing OGC standards, as well as new candidate standards introduced or developed specifically for the testbed.

“NGA has built an architecture that is heavily reliant on OGC Web Services,” said David Wesloh, NGA Business Rep to the OGC. “NGA is constantly evolving to support mission partner needs and make use of the latest technologies and trends from the commercial world. Our ability to exploit those capabilities and insert our unique requirements through the OGC Testbed process is a tremendous, cost effective way of staying at the forefront of the GEOINT community.”

David Wesloh continued: “Where else can you ask questions like ‘How do I run Geospatial Web Services if the Web is not available?’ and then have the intellectual and technical resources of over 500 government, academic, industry, and individual consortium members not only answer the question, but also build prototypes and document the operational process.”

Attendees of the demonstration will learn about Testbed-13 outcomes and benefits. The morning of the first day will provide a high-level presentation summarizing the main achievements of Testbed 13 as well as a summary outlook of Testbed 14. After lunch, testbed participants will present their work.

Day 2 of the demonstration will examine technical details of the testbed activities, potential future directions, connections to OGC Standards Program activities, and the necessary follow up activities that will ensure maximum incorporation of testbed results into the wider geospatial standardization domain. A panel session before lunch will feature a broader discussion of selected topics.

Some highlights from the newly developed solutions to be demonstrated include:

  • Under the Earth Observation Clouds (EOC) thread, Testbed 13 developed a standards-based mechanism to make any type of application available as a cloud service. This allows the execution of big data processes close to the actual data and avoids expensive data transports.

  • The Cross Community Interoperability (CCI) thread in Testbed 13 was tasked with a wide range of technologies and problems, including: data quality and geospatial taxonomies in the Aviation domain; access to geospatial data Limited Bandwidth (DDIL) environments; styling, MapML, and semantics; further development of MapML; and more.

  • The Streaming and 3D Data (S3D) thread advanced three dimensional visualization and data streaming capabilities.

  • The Dynamic Source Integration (DSI) thread explored secure data exchange in the context of Mass Migration Scenarios.

  • The Compliance Testing (COT) thread advanced reference implementations and tests for GEOINT profiles (NSG WFS 2.0 and NSG WMTS 1.0).

...and much more!

OGC testbed demonstrations give a ‘first look’ at the latest developments coming from the OGC, and allow members and the public alike to experience cutting-edge technology in action to better understand how it can benefit their business or operation.

About the OGC Innovation Program

The OGC Innovation Program provides global, hands-on, collaborative prototyping for rapid development and delivery of proven candidate specifications to the OGC Standards Program, where these candidates can then be considered for further action. In Innovation Program initiatives, participants team together to solve specific geo-processing interoperability problems posed by the initiative’s Sponsors. These initiatives include testbeds, pilot projects, interoperability experiments, and interoperability support services – all designed to encourage rapid development, testing, validation and adoption of open, consensus-based standards. More information on the OGC Innovation Program, including its policies and procedures, can be found at www.opengeospatial.org/ogc/policies/ippp.

About OGC

The Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) is an international consortium of more than 525 companies, government agencies, research organizations, and universities participating in a consensus process to develop publicly available geospatial standards. OGC standards support interoperable solutions that ‘geo-enable’ the Web, wireless and location-based services, and mainstream IT. OGC standards empower technology developers to make geospatial information and services accessible and useful within any application that needs to be geospatially enabled.
