Spatially Chooses CrateDB to Power Location-Based Insights for SMBs

CrateDB selected over Postgres and Cassandra for fast analysis of terabytes of geospatial “Localgraphics™” data

SAN FRANCISCO — (BUSINESS WIRE) — November 7, 2017 — Crate.io, developers of CrateDB, a leading open source SQL database for real time analytics of IoT and machine data, today announced that Spatially, a provider of location intelligence software, chose CrateDB over Postgres and Cassandra to give SMBs a comprehensive view of customers and business opportunities in their area. Spatially is a user of CrateDB Enterprise Edition, using the database for rapid analysis of tens of terabytes of Localgraphics™ data compiled about major U.S. cities like Boston, Seattle, and Miami.

Spatially uses massive datasets, such as U.S. census data, public transit, traffic and device-tracking data, to help SMBs decide where to put their business and how to advertise to their customers. Its customers can look at foot and vehicle traffic, spending and both facility and advertising placement by local competitors.

“Spatially is a data-driven platform, so finding the right database was critical,” said Spatially CTO, Kartik Venkatesh. “Postgres couldn’t keep up with the data we have; Datastax Enterprise had ingest scaling issues with spatial data; Cassandra didn’t have spatial query operations. CrateDB was the only database we found that could smoothly process data for our users and for our data science team. We fell in love with it immediately.”

To find geographic insights through the patterns and relationships in their data, Spatially data scientists analyze terabytes of data in CrateDB using SQL, GO, Python, R, Spark/EMR and others. Spatially engineers then implement those data sets, queries and algorithms in a customer-facing SaaS system that is also powered by CrateDB. Spatially plans to scale CrateDB to handle hundreds of terabytes as it continues to expand to other cities.

CrateDB is an open source SQL database built on top of NoSQL storage, indexing and networking technology for simpler scaling and greater data model flexibility. Its unique architecture makes it ideal for ingesting and querying a firehose of IoT and machine-generated data in real time and it gives developers the benefits of NoSQL databases without forcing them to abandon SQL. CrateDB features the following innovations:

  • Distributed SQL query engine for faster JOINs, aggregations and ad-hoc queries

In-memory columnar indexes and a fully distributed query engine enable CrateDB to perform complex queries in real time and overcome many of the performance and flexibility limitations of first-generation distributed SQL databases.

  • Data and query versatility via ANSI SQL on NoSQL underpinnings

CrateDB is a unique combination of SQL and NoSQL technology, which enables dynamic data schemas and a wide range of analytics and search, on time series, full text, JSON, geospatial and other structured and unstructured data without having to use different database engines to do so.

  • Simple scaling through a container architecture and automatic data sharding

Database scalability is vital for handling variations in machine data volume, but this is normally difficult to do. CrateDB can run as a cluster of containers, which enables it to be scaled easily with container platforms like Docker or Kubernetes. In addition, CrateDB automatically shards and redistributes data across the cluster as it changes size to optimize performance and high availability.

“We are really excited to be working with Spatially as they pioneer the field of Localgraphics,” said Christian Lutz, CEO of Crate.io. “The places customers go in their cars and with their phones can fundamentally change an SMB’s advertising strategy, or even the location of their business. We built CrateDB to support this type of data and we’re thrilled to see it shaping the world we live in.”
