Interactive Crime Map Shows Where Baltimore's Most Violent Neighborhoods, DUIs and Prostitution Arrests Are Located

Using data compiled from the Baltimore City Open Data, DuBoff & Associates, Chartered easily shows what areas of the city are more prone to crime

BALTIMORE, June 13, 2017 — (PRNewswire) —  According to the most recent statistics by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), Baltimore is ranked as the seventh most violent city in the United States. Compared to other major U.S. cities, Baltimore also has the second highest murder rate in the nation — at 55 murders for every 100,000 residents.

"One of the big reasons we created these interactive maps is so that residents can have a better understanding of their surroundings," explained attorney Joel DeBuff. "One way to keep crime down and avoid becoming a victim is knowing what places are high in crime to either stay clear of those areas altogether or at least be more cautious when traveling to these locations. Vigilance is key."

Based on the " Most Violent Neighborhoods" interactive crime map, there were 318 homicides and more than 660 shootings in the city in 2016. The Brooklyn neighborhood, which is located in in the city's Southern district, came in at #1 for having more than 180 violent crimes, ranging from assaults to shootings to murders. Downtown Baltimore came in at #2 with 178 violent crimes reported. Rounding out the top three is the Sandtown-Winchester neighborhood with 174 violent crimes reported last year.

"While no city is immune to crime we hope that our local leaders will also find the maps helpful. When you can easily visualize the areas that are 'hot spots' for crime, then you can zero in on those communities and hopefully take measures to further lower the crime rates in those areas," stated DeBuff.

Violent crime isn't the only problem to plague the city. Although considered the world's oldest profession, Baltimore police have cracked down on prostitution, which still remains illegal in most states, through large sting operations, fake solicitation ads and the use of "undercover Janes." According to the law firm's interactive crime map on prostitution, 670 Baltimore residents have been arrested on prostitution charges since 2013.

"New data that we've collected recently from the city's police department has made it strikingly clear where law enforcement is targeting prostitutes," stated DeBuff.

Over the last four years, police have arrested 25 people on Hartford Road for prostitution. Since 2013, a total of 28 arrests were made for prostitution charges on the Baltimore stretch of Dundalk Avenue. East of Downtown Baltimore lies South Conkling Street, which was the site of 16 prostitution charges between Pulaski Highway and Bank Street. DUIs remain a big problem for the city of Baltimore, too. Every day, 28 people in the United States die in an alcohol-related vehicle crash—that's one person every 53 minutes. Last year, there were 1,752 Baltimore drivers charged with DWIs.

"Unfortunately, drunk driving is a big risk factor for car accidents. Someone's poor choice to drink and drive can lead to long-term consequences—even death. I can't stress enough the importance of being a defensive driver when behind the wheel," stated DeBuff. "It's critical for drivers to remain alert, free from distractions and prepared to take evasive action at any time."

According to the law firm's interactive map on DUIs, Northbound I-100 & West Northern Parkway saw the most DWI arrests—23 total last year.  Northbound I-100 & West Cold Spring Lane came in at #2 with 19 DWI arrests. Coming in at #3 is 1500 Russell Street. Police charged 12 people with DWI in this area.  Ranking #4, Horseshoe Casino saw 10 DWI arrests in 2016. Finally, coming at #5 is West Northern Parkway & Falls Road. Police charged nine people with DWI last year.
