Renesas Electronics America Expands Renesas IoT Sandbox to Accelerate the Path from IoT Design Prototyping to Production

Collaboration with Bug Labs, Medium One, and Seeed Studio Speeds the End-to-End Process with Data Monitoring, Data Intelligence, and Open-Source Hardware

SANTA CLARA, Calif. — (BUSINESS WIRE) — May 15, 2017 — Renesas Electronics America Inc., a premier supplier of advanced semiconductor solutions, today announced it has expanded Renesas IoT Sandbox to shorten the prototyping process for Internet of Things (IoT) design and to simplify the path to production for small- to large-sized companies developing IoT solutions.

In collaboration with Bug Labs, Medium One, and Seeed Studio, Renesas has broadened Renesas IoT Sandbox by enhancing the data monitoring and data intelligence developer components areas to significantly speed the prototyping process, and by adding the new Renesas Synergy™ S5D9 IoT Fast Prototyping Kit that can be used for both prototyping and as a production module.

Renesas Electronics America will demonstrate new Renesas IoT Sandbox solutions at IoT World 2017, booth 725, May 16-18, 2017, in Santa Clara, Calif. Attendees will learn more about its data monitoring, data intelligence, and hybrid prototype/production design capabilities with demonstrations of cold chain tracking, equipment anomaly detection, and how the Synergy S5D9 IoT Fast Prototyping Kit can be assembled as both a kit and a module.

“Prototyping is the key to fast and accurate IoT deployment. By simplifying the build out, testing, and update process, designers can finalize their proof of concepts and move to production mode more quickly. Our customers tell us that getting to market sooner in competitive environments is at the top of their list,” said Semir Haddad, Director of Product Marketing at Renesas Electronics America Inc. “Together with Bug Labs, Medium One, and Seeed Studio, we have enhanced Renesas IoT Sandbox with production-ready cloud services and open-source hardware that make it easier for customers to step from prototype to production.”

“The advantage of Renesas IoT Sandbox is the simplicity it brings to the embedded IoT design process. Developers can easily integrate their Renesas IoT Fast Prototyping Kits with Bug Labs Dweet messaging and Freeboard dashboards to jump start their solution development. Renesas IoT Sandbox enables them to build real-time data monitoring applications in under five minutes and then quickly transition into a production deployment,” said Peter Semmelhack, Bug Labs Founder and CEO.

“Prototyping environments play a key role in reducing the complexity associated with IoT design. Renesas IoT Sandbox powered by Medium One’s Data Intelligence platform makes it easy for IoT developers to build applications that integrate with many of the popular cloud-based web services, freeing up their time to focus on their application expertise, making applications smarter and more valuable to their customers,” said David Thai, Founder and CEO at Medium One.

“Time to market is a vital aspect of successful IoT products, and the ability for users to develop prototypes with the kit and then leverage the same board design as open-source hardware for their production product gives product development teams a huge competitive advantage,” said Eric Pan, CEO of Seeed Studio.

About Renesas IoT Sandbox

Renesas IoT Sandbox is the fastest path from IoT concept to prototype. It enables personalized data intelligence for system developers working with the Renesas SynergyTM Platform, the Renesas RL78 Family and RX Family of microcontrollers (MCUs), and the Renesas RZ Family of microprocessors (MPUs).

Expanding on the original Renesas IoT Sandbox, Renesas and Bug Labs collaborated to add the data monitoring developer area to the existing data intelligence developer area powered by cloud services from Medium One. The two developer areas are complementary, and developers can choose which is better suited to their application needs and design prototypes in either or both at no cost.

System developers working with Renesas IoT Sandbox can plug into the Synergy S5D9 IoT Fast Prototyping Kit and leverage pre-built dashboards in the data monitoring developer area to manage the kit’s sensor data – creating prototypes in minutes. For IoT applications that require more than data monitoring, Renesas and Medium One have added access to pre-built API libraries for third-party web services including Alexa, Twitter, and Salesforce as part of the data intelligence developer area. Built-in IoT libraries are also provided for processing sensor data in real-time data and analyzing data to predict trends and detect anomalies.

The Synergy S5D9 IoT Fast Prototyping Kit offers a hybrid approach that enables system developers to jump quickly and cost effectively from prototype to production. Based on open-source hardware, the board comes assembled with all the components required for prototyping, including Grove connectors that can be used to add other Seeed Studio Grove Sensors. The board can also be assembled with production connectors for use as an IoT module that is smaller than a credit card.
