The World's Smallest Automotive-Grade LDO Regulators From ROHM

KYOTO, JAPAN and SANTA CLARA, CA --(Marketwired - October 04, 2016) - ROHM has recently announced the availability of the world's smallest LDO regulators designed for automotive safety modules requiring greater reliability and increased miniaturization, such as sensors, cameras, and radars in ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance System) applications.

In recent years, the proliferation of accident prevention measures and automated driving systems are demanding advanced safety systems that deliver higher performance. This increases the number of sensors, camera modules, and other mounted components required, but at the same time there is a need to decrease part size to improve design flexibility and reduce vehicle weight. Until now, however, it has been difficult to design power supply ICs that deliver high reliability in a compact form factor. As a result, given the harsh environment automotive systems are subjected to, including increased noise, temperature, and vibration, the smallest package size that can still provide the necessary level of reliability has been 1.5mm2.

In response, ROHM leverages a vertically integrated production system along with proprietary analog design, process, and package technologies to achieve the smallest form factor in the industry. The AEC-Q100 qualified BUxxJA2MNVX-C series provides automotive-grade reliability in an ultra-compact 1mm2 package, decreasing mounting area by 55% over the existing 1.5mm2 products. At the same time, current consumption and response characteristics are reduced by half (35uA circuit current, 65mV load fluctuation), contributing to smaller, higher performance automotive safety modules. Also, unlike conventional products that require an external capacitance of at least 1.0uF to prevent oscillation, these new regulators support smaller external capacitors as low as 0.22uF, enabling further miniaturization.

Key Features
1. The industry's smallest (1mm2) automotive-grade LDO regulators
ROHM leverages industry-leading analog design, process, and package technologies to develop the world's smallest automotive-grade LDO regulators, achieving all required characteristics in a 1mm2 size that reduces footprint by 55% over conventional 1.5mm2 products. In addition, AEC-Q100 qualification provides the high degree of reliability demanded for automotive applications, ensuring worry-free operation even under harsh noise and temperature environments.

2. Achieves simultaneous low current consumption with excellent response characteristics
When focusing on decreasing IC size, since higher resistance that goes along with increasing circuit scale is not possible, circuit current tends to increase. Also, both improved response characteristics (output voltage low load variation) and low current consumption required for power supply ICs must be considered. The BUxxJA2MNVX-C series utilizes original circuit technology to achieve an ideal balance between response characteristics (65mV load variation) and current consumption (35uA - half that of conventional products).

3. Stable operation ensured even with an external capacitance as low as 0.22uF
Power supply ICs require an external capacitor as a countermeasure against output fluctuations/oscillations during input variations. Unlike conventional solutions that require 1.0uF, ROHM's new ICs ensure stable voltage output with just 0.22uF, making it possible to use smaller capacitors that contribute to a smaller mounting area.

Applications

  • Sensors, cameras, and radar for ADAS
  • Drive recorders

And other automotive systems requiring greater miniaturization
